On the furnace requirements for the mechanical testing of materials at elevated temperature

A review ls made of tbs sensitivity to temperature change of the results of tensile, creep, stress rupture and fatigue tests on typical engineering metals. The temperature sensitivity is then used as the basis for an examination of tbs temperature tolerances specified by the existing standard codes for elevated temperature testing. Guidance is also given for toleranc8s for elevated temperature fatigue testing, for which no standard codes exist at present. The rate at which a specimen is brought to test temperature is shown to be of some importance and is a design parameter not covered by the standard codes. Suggestions are made for suitable heating rates
