Abstract

This report was submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a MSc (Stedebouwkunde). Alternatives for the development of an undeveloped region in West Suriname are evaluated, e.g. a growth pole vs dispersed settlements; large scale industry and agriculture vs small scale industry and farming. A comprehensive regional development plan for ths tropical frontier emerges from the rational evaluation of these alternative development strategies. Finally, a programme for the phased implementation of the regiional development plan is outlined. The Appendix Report contains the Literature Study which informed both the formulation of alternatives and the selection process of the alternative that provides the most balanced and responsible strategy for the development of West-Suriname from economic, social, environmental, administrative, and technoligal perspectives.
