Measured circular intake performance in inclined flow for a series of semi-circular lip profiles

Data, relating mainly to mean total pressure 1055, in inclined flow, are presented for a series of five circular intakes with common centre- body (0.5 diameter ratio) and employing semi-circular lip profiles. Lip radius to intake, radius ratios were 0 . 10, 0 . 15, 0 . 20, 0 . 25 and 0 . 30 . Measurements were made at velocity ratios up to 2 .0 and cross - flow angles up to 665 degrees . Test intake Reynolds numbers ranged from 0.5 x 10 to 2.8 x 106 depending on velocity ratio . The available range of comparatively loss-free operation in inclined flow is presented for each intake and discussed in relation to previous data on elliptical lip profiles (Ref. 1) and in terms of the effects of Reynolds number , lip radius and lip profile. The regime characterised by strong flow separation effects is described by contours of mean total pressure 1055 (in terms of bath intake and free - stream dynamic pressure) and by estimates of maximum/mean velocity ratios associated with intake velocity distribution.
