Institution National Aerospace Laboratory NLR Date 1982-12-31 Abstract The Netherlands remote sensing community has expressed a need for systemcorrected SLAR imagery. This means that corrections for aircraft position and attitude as well as sensor characteristics need to be applied to raw data acquired with the Netherlands digital SLAR. The PARES system was designed to fulfil this requirement. The distortions resulting from variations in aircraft path and attitude are analyzed. It is shown that aircraft roll and yaw are major contributants to image distortions. A general mathematical model is derived to correct for geometric effects with emphasis on SLAR data. It is shown that the antenna gain pattern (antenna diagram) needs to be accurately determined to enable radiometric correction. The elements of the radar formula are shown to be important factors for radiometric corrections. An outline of the PARES system is given and some significant results are presented. Elements for further improvement are identified.
