Piers, M.A. Institution National Aerospace Laboratory NLR Date 1990-04-28 Abstract Maintenance organisations experience an increasing pressure to optimize the availability of company assets. Meanwhile the complexity of systems increases. As a consequence, there is a need for tools with which maintenance can be performed more effectively and efficiently. NLR is engaged in applied research into knowledge-based systems for monitoring and diagnosis of technical systems. This article describes an investigation into the applicability of knowledge-based systems for diagnosis of aircraft systems. A knowledge-based system has been designed to support ground engineers in the maintenance of the Fokker 100 air conditioning system. Evaluation shows that the system performs well if complaints are described with enough detail.
