Darling, J.A. Institution National Research Council Canada, Division of Mechanical Engineering, Gas Dynamics Section Date 1968-02-28 Abstract A technique is described for impregnating polyurethane foam with PETN. The method consists of soaking up the foam in a saturated PETN/acetone solution and precipitating the crystals within the foam by rapid dilution with water. Using foam ˜ 1 inch in diameter, precipitation from a solution at the boiling point (˜ 61½°C) results in the explosive loading density of ˜ 0.45 gm/ cc. Satisfactory agreement of the average loading densities with prediction, based on the solubility data for PETN in acetone, is obtained for the temperature range of 20ºC to 58ºC for foams of ˜ 1 inch and ˜ 5½ inches in diameter.
