Institution National Aerospace Laboratory NLR Date 1994-11-07 Abstract ARTEMIS (Africa Real-Time Environmental Monitoring Information System) is used by FAQ (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) to support both its internal prograimnes on early warning and food security and desert locust control as well as developing countries in Africa by processing image information originating from the METEOSAT and NOAA satellites into products like estimated rainfall, cold cloud duration and vegetation coverage. With this information, the progress and status of the growing season can be closely monitored and areas with possible crop failures, as well as potential locust breeding areas, identified in an early stage. Moreover, fast availability of ARTEMIS product is crucial for adequate decision making in this area. Until now, these products are disseminated to the external users via hardcopies, diskettes or e-mail-attached files. In each of these cases, the ARTEMIS operator has to make these products available by performing manual actions. Under ESA-contract NLR is developing a "Network Interface Unit" (NIU), which will enhance ARTEMIS with the capability to automatically answer e-mail requests for ARTEMIS products. Selectable parts of standard ARTEMIS products can thus be transferred to the end user via standard e-mail in the digital format required.
