By modulating the pulses transmitted by the LORAN-C stations, a low speed digital communication channel becomes available. This datalink must fulfill a number of requirements within the limitations of a low data rate. In this report, the use of ternary modulation in the datalink is discussed. With this type of modulation, the data rate can be improved so that the capability to satisfy the requirements increases. An example of a complete ternary modulation scheme that fulfills all requirements is also given. The performance of this scheme is compared to that of a binary modulation scheme in a simulated LORAN-C environment. It is found that the use of ternary modulation is feasible when the Signal-to-Noise Ratio of the LORAN-C signal is sufficiently high. The proposed ternary modulation scheme satisfies more of the requirements with a higher net data speed when compared to binary modulation.
