Prolonged sitting is an inevitable reality for wheelchair users and is associated with a high risk of pressure ulcers, discomfort, and heat accumulation as a result of long-term pressure and impaired airflow. Apart from lowering daily comfort, these states have the ability to create serious medical conditions that are difficult and costly to correct. Against this backdrop, Perfect Fit Upholstery strives to create seating solutions that integrate ergonomic performance, user comfort, and clinical safety through innovative material development and modular design.

Current wheelchair cushions on the market today rely on the quintessential traditional foam and gel materials and thus compromise on pressure redistribution and breathability. Pressure-reduction cushions will trap heat and moisture, and breathable ones might lack sufficient flexibility and long-term stability. This compromise necessitates a next-generation solution that combines comfort, hygiene, and biomechanical efficiency.

The Airspring concept, developed in this project in collaboration with Perfect Fit, addresses this hurdle through a hybrid construction of Airfiber–Octaspring. The construction of zoned stiffness zones and high airflow fabrics is used to achieve pressure redistribution optimisation, temperature regulation, and user accommodation. Building on material that is already used in bedding and seating products, the concept fits well with Perfect Fit's mission of bringing medical functionality together with manufacturability and sustainability.

In parallel, a 3D-printed form of the Octaspring was explored to push customization one step further, allowing user-scanned, person-specific seating geometries and stiffness profiles to be optimized. Together, these designs demonstrate how novel material science and modularity can advance user comfort and clinical safety while maintaining responsible, scalable manufacturing within the healthcare ecosystem.
