The thesis explores the historical ethnographic study of the Malaysian domestic garden which integrates a multi-disciplinary lens, taking into account areas of architecture, landscape, culture studies, food studies, and media studies. It argues that the nuanced perception of the garden and its close relationship with the kitchen in the Malaysian context is tied to a shared cultural origin of the village which helped shaped perceptions of botany, practice, and food. This relationship is subsequently maintained into the urban-suburban context and reflected in the layouts of housing plans and present-day community gardening projects.
