The general concept and meaning of mobility have been changing and evolving since the start of mankind. Mobility has become more than getting from point A to B. Mobility is changing from solely being a means to reach a specific goal into being a goal on its own. PwC also realized this. However, at this moment PwC has no vision to do something with this mobility paradigm shift for themselves or their clients. This graduation project focused on the development this mobility vision for PwC and a design based on this vision. This is formulated in the assignment: Design a meaningful product (- service system) that enables, facilitates or improves personal mobility, in the Netherlands, by 2035. Through conducting research, I created a future context. The future context is composed out of twelve cases in which people are unable to take personal responsibility for their mobility. It prevents them from creating favorable conditions in which they and others are able to create a better self. Together with PwC I decided to focus on the increasing socio-economic inequality case because, positively contributing to that case is most in line with PwC’s own vision. The selected case is about people are not able to take personal responsibly to effectively use their mobility to grow their prosperity or that of others, due to new (global) external factors. I created a mobility vision for PwC that is focused at delivering a positive contribution to the above-mentioned problem. The goal of the vision is: PwC wants people to responsibly use their short-term mobility to create a better self. Essential is that the success of it depends on the increase and/or improvement in short- and long-term socio-economic prospects for themselves and others too. Moreover, these prospectives should honor the creation of a better world for flora and fauna. PwC can achieve this by: Creating with people’s mobility surplus personal interdependencies, between people’s short- and long-term socio-economic prospects. Flock has been created to realize this vision. Flock is a mobility system, owned by the Dutch government, which uses road pricing to charge users based on their departure and arrival location of their journey. Users traveling from a geographical area, which is valuable for society, to another area which is less valuable will be charged less than vice versa. Flock calls these geographical ‘mobility epicentres’. This leads to more socio-economic equality which is more uniformly spread in the Netherlands on the long-term. Additionally, Flock offers people the ability to participate in a nation-wide de-centralized mobility network. People participate by investing in it with a privately-owned product that is capable of providing mobility. This is called ‘mobility virtualization’. If done successfully, the user will be granted access to means that are invested by others in the network that provide mobility. This can be in the same or different mobility epicenters. The government is in possession of a desktop application and the user, mostly Dutch citizens, are in possession of a smartphone app to interact with the mobility system.

Philips Lighting has developed a new technology that allows LED lighting to be embedded into concrete. The goal of this assignment was to find a new business opportunity for this technology. After a thorough research the conclusion was drawn that architects are very interested in this technology, but they see different possibilities and want to use it for different applications. On top of that, architects would like to have more control of the total design including the lighting design aspect of their designs. This assignment resulted in PAL, Philips Architectural Lighting. PAL is a product-service-marketing system that inspires and enables architects to design integrated lighting applications as an integral part of their architectural project.

The term ‘polarization’ has become well-known in the public debate. In January 2019, the SCP (Netherlands Institute for Social Research) reported that 77% of the Dutch citizens think disagreements on social issues increase. As we mostly hear and see the more extreme and opposing sides in the media, it seems like society is divided about many issues. Polarization can be defined as ‘sharpening of opposites between groups in society that can result in tensions between these groups and increased segregation’. In a polarized society, one is either positive or negative, with little space for more nuanced emotional awareness. Yet, all of our thoughts, motivations and behaviours are influenced by our emotions. Emotion Studio, a research and innovation agency, developed an instrument to measure nuanced emotion profiles on products: PrEmo. This thesis aims for a new application of PrEmo on social issues, in which the method leads to a better emotional understanding in the public debate and acts as the key to unlock people’s concerns that are hidden behind viewpoints. PrEmo is a non-verbal self-report tool that measures seven positive and negative emotions, expressed as 14 cartoons. The project focuses on news media organisations, that can serve as the first communicators of society’s perspectives. The influence of media on polarization was analysed through desk research, a literature study and interviews with media, experts and news consumers. Four key problems were defined, addressing potential fields for change: 1) an unnoticed majority of perspectives, 2) little emotional awareness 3) nuance is lost as news must be clear and attractive to be read and sold, 4) diverging interpretations of reality. Subsequently, a design vision was created: "Design to reduce the perception of polarization by enabling Dutch citizens to explore and contribute to the variety of society’s perspectives on social themes, using emotional awareness." The final design proposal, Perspective News, is an online platform on which Dutch citizens can explore society’s perspectives. Perspective News consists of an emotion measurement survey based on PrEmo, that captures people’s emotions and concerns after reading a news article, and a platform, integrated into existing news media website, that displays the captured perspectives. The design realizes 1) an accessible possibility for participation and 2) an inclusive image of society’s perspectives. Perspective News provides a stage to everyone, not just the extremes. The platform of Perspective News helps to get a sense of what a significant amount of society thinks and feels. Perspective News also enables users to compare their perspective to others and supports personal reflection. A communication strategy and implementation roadmap complement the design proposal. The concept was positively evaluated by end-users, media editors and experts. For further development of the concept, recommendations are suggested. Perspective News can be a first step towards reducing the perception of polarization, by amplifying the variety of perspectives that exist in society, which opens the way to the ultimate goal: supporting mutual understanding and empathy as foundation for a solidary society.

The healthcare sector has reached a turning point in which the patient stands central during the continuum of care. Erasmus MC is a leading hospital in health care innovation and thrives on pioneering this shift towards value-based care. Value-based care is a philosophy of delivering optimal care for the patient while reducing costs. To reach this, Erasmus MC has implemented a five-year strategy focused on dedication and technology. Dedication emphasizes the importance of providing a patient with the right treatments and supporting them in the process. Technology is seen as an enabler in both the procedures as well as improving patient experience. The question now is how to create the perfect balance between dedication and technology to optimize the patient experience while streamlining the journey for Erasmus MC staff. This project focuses on the specific case of the Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedure. This procedure involves the implantation of valve prostheses in the native aortic valve of the patient’s heart by percutaneous puncture via their transfemoral artery. It is a minimally invasive procedure under local anesthesia, meaning they are vividly awake during the procedure. TAVI patients are, on average, 80 years old. This project evolved from a problem identified by an interventional cardiologist at the Erasmus MC. He noticed that technological advancements were improving the procedure; however, the patient experience was not progressing. The majority of the patients were anxious and uninformed prior to the procedure. This is a problem because pre-operative anxiety affects the interaction between cardiologist and patient, it hinders the person from processing information (Cammen, 2021), affects the post-operative recovery process (Yuzkat et al., 2020), and decreases overall patient satisfaction (Herrera et al.,2009). Therefore, the challenge was: Design a tool to improve the patient experience by reducing pre-operative anxiety of patients who undergo a TAVI. To tackle this, extensive user research was conducted on the journey of TAVI patients. This led to a reliable patient experience curve identifying the pain and success points as well as the reasons for these peaks. Concurrently, the enablers of positive patient experience are defined through a literature review. This led to the concept proposal, an improved TAVI patient journey. The new patient journey consists of (1) several new touchpoints throughout the continuum of care that ensures the patient feels recognized and improves the continuity, (2) a physical care package (Zorgpakket) delivered to the patient's doorstep, supporting the patient by providing them with the right tools to prepare themselves for the procedure, and (3) a 3D animation of the TAVI procedure, creating an accessible manner for elderly patients to use technology which has an added value for the patient journey. An extensive validation study has proven that the new patient journey, specifically the Zorgpakket, helps the patient feel at ease by providing the tools to form the right expectations and increase trust through empathy and professionalism. The aimed long-term effect is to eliminate the pain points in the experience curve. The proposal is a desirable solution that fits the patient's needs while streamlining the workflow of the healthcare professionals. The different aspects of the project are applicable in other areas within the healthcare sector and will serve as inspiration within Erasmus MC to reach the goal of value-based care.

Citizens experience a growing gap between their lived world and that of governmental institutions. The historical low turnup rate of last municipal elections in Rotterdam, 39%, reflect the low trust people have in the municipality and how they feel unrepresented by the city council. Because of this, municipalities are striving to bring politics closer to citizens and are increasingly working more participatory; including citizens in city- and policy making. The public good became something that is not created publically anymore. The interaction between the municipality and citizens is characterised by distance: civil servants are used to design services without citizens and citizens are used to a municipality that does its own thing. Both are not used to approaching each other in order to collaboratively make better public spaces, services and policies. If the municipality does not put effort in finding new ways to actively invite people to participate the distance will become bigger, making cities less inclusive and neighbourhoods less liveable. Participatory activities strengthen the social network of people within a neighbourhood and through this a neighbourhood becomes more resilient. Also through a stronger local network, people tend to engage more in participatory activities. It’s an ongoing challenge for the municipality to include less obvious citizens in this local network of participation processes. The municipality should be a facilitator of community building and actively approach people in order to connect to them. The Wijkbox concept is an intervention that combines these social and participatory aspects. In this box, citizens can leave their opinion, dreams and concerns about the neighbourhood. The box is handed out by civil servants in the neighbourhood and later passed on from citizen to citizen. As the boxes travel through the neighbourhood, more opinions are collected, more social connections are formed and new people enter the local network. The Wijkbox is a starting point for collaboration related to the topics proposed in the boxes. It allows civil servants to approach citizens more personally and provides citizens an accessible way to form their opinion about the neighbourhood, possibly stimulating them to join other participatory activities. The Wijkbox was tested in two pilots with both citizens and civil servants. The Wijkbox shows potential in reaching ‘not-yet-active’ citizens and stimulating social connection within the neighbourhood. Citizens evaluated the form of participation as positive and civil servants were enthusiastic about the personal approach the Wijkbox initiates. At the moment, the concept is being implemented by the municipality in two local projects. It shows that the concept can potentially contribute to the more local approach that the municipality wants to take. The results of these experiments, which will be available after this graduation project, will show whether the concept benefits real-life projects and if it contributes to a long term relationship forming between Rotterdammers and the municipality.

At this moment, the problem of plastic pollution does not need an introduction. Although recycling rates are slowly rising, plastic pollution remains one of the biggest threads to the global ecosystem. Especially in low-to-middle-income countries, industrial recycling systems are sparse due to their required investment. Precious Plastic is an organization aiming to tackle plastic pollution, step by step. They openly distribute blueprints of recycling machines for anyone to use, which enables local recyclers to start their own informal recycling workshop. Over 40,000 people in 400 workspaces are connected through the Precious Plastic Universe, in which recyclers, designers and plastic collectors collaborate. One of their machines is an injection machine, capable of injecting recycling plastic into a mold (figure 1). This machine is low cost, easy to build, and creates a beautiful marbled aesthetic that convincingly tells the story of the value of recycled plastic. However, the design of the machine has quite a number of problems. Mainly, it requires an excessive amount of hand-force which exceeds human ergonomic limits. The machine also has a number of safety and buildability issues. Lastly, the machine does not easily enable tailoring due to its monolithic design. Next to the problems relating to the injection machine, Precious Plastic has noticed they often miss out on gathering improvements that builders implement in their machine. Due to this, valuable opportunities for development of the machine are not redeemed. This project aims to tackle these problems through two design outcomes. The first outcome is an online framework where users can tailor their injection machine based on their needs and upload their machine improvements. The concept aims to transform the current monolithic design sharing system into an inviting modular framework. The second outcome is an advanced version of the injection machine. The goal aimed to develop, validate and document a functioning prototype of an advanced arbor injection machine. The design of the machine decreases the required input force by 70%, while producing a higher injection pressure and solving the prior safety and usage problems. The design of the machine was developed in active collaboration with a group of experienced machine builders and will be distributed throughout the Precious Plastic Universe. In the end, both design outcomes contribute towards a more sustainable world, in which people are empowered through Open Source Hardware and plastic is in fact precious.

To stay relevant and beat the competition, corporate organisations must innovate disrtupively. Within the financial services industry, it proves hard to remain competitive and stay relevant in a rapidly changing environment. In response to this, Group Innovation was established as the innovation department of ABN AMRO to focus on realizing disruptive innovation. Within Group Innovation the process to generate new business concepts that can eventually be turned into ventures is called the ‘Explore’. However, it was indicated that the quality and quantity of business concept generated by the Explore allow for improvement. Therefore, the following research assignment was formulated: Design a suitable approach to achieve greater quality and quantity in the generation of new business concepts, to help financial services firms innovate disruptively. A case study of Group Innovation of ABN AMRO. Research has been conducted to understand the current Explore state and identify the main challenges. As a response and final design, an approach that consists of anew perspective of the purpose outcome, process and conditions for the Explore is delivered. or the outcome of the Explore, the ‘business concept canvas’ is designed. This canvas can be perceived as a summary of the most important information that a business concept exists of and is based on. It is a blueprint for a venture. The canvas also represents the process that precedes it of which the double diamond approach of Design Thinking forms the foundation.  In response to the research assignment, the approach is expected to be suitable since it exists of a semi-structured format that allows for both guidance and clarity as well as that it provides sufficient room, and in fact stimulates, freedom and creativity. This is represented by the business concept canvas, that is confirmed to be implemented at Group Innovation. The canvas steers the Explore team to retrieve the right insights which includes providing a strong foundation for why a certain problem should be solved, as well as that it directs the team to deliver a well-considered business concept that embodies how this problem should be solved. This deliberate way of summarizing a business concept and the process that precedes it, add to why it is expected that the quality of business concepts will moreover increase.  In addition, this Explore approach should be implemented systematically and continuously and therefore an implementation strategy to realize the above mentioned is delivered. This strategy exists of four phases that all add up to the objective of ‘continuously generating business concepts that have the ability to disrupt’.  This project has been executed as a case study for Group Innovation of ABN AMRO. Nevertheless, the approach presented in this thesis can also be applied by other financial services firms since the approach does not involve any information that is specific and only usable for ABN AMRO.

Vanderlande Industries is global market leader in logistic process automation at airports, the parcel industry and warehousing market. However in order for them to stay a global leader Vanderlande and keep the innovation standard high, they started developing a set of design roadmapping workshops called The Long Now (TLN) project The TLN is a project that developed a set of design roadmapping workshops, which resulted in a future vision together with a set of new product service concepts for the airports platform. Having the results, the team working on TLN was looking for a way to present them to the board of Vanderlande. But therefore the results of these roadmapping workshops had to be made more tangible. And this graduation project aims to develop a smart design strategy roadmap, which has the ability to internally align Vanderlande Industries with the long now (TLN) project. In order to come to the right design strategy method I first performed research in three directions: Research on Vanderlande and the way operating within the company, research on design roadmapping and finally research on smart roadmapping. Having performed this research I came to the conclusion that there had to be made an interactive platform which displays the results and needs to be adjustable, accessible and connectable. Knowing this I developed a design strategy method based on website design and user experience containing six steps. The six steps went as followed: first user classification in which you determine the end-user. Second, user class description in which you find the user needs. Thirdly comes the object modelling of the scope, looking at the content and functional requirements of the smart design roadmap. The fourth step includes the object modelling of the structure. Fifth is navigational design, aiming at the way you can walkthrough the roadmap and finally was implementation design. This is where you created the actual look and feel of the smart design roadmap. After performing these 5 steps it was still an iterative proces in which I co-designed the smart design roadmap with multiple people before I came to my final design. But when I came to my final design, I was able to conclude that when performing the six steps of the design strategy I was able to develop a smart design roadmap that internally aligned Vanderlande with TLN and it became a lot more tangible due to supportive technologies, new partnerships and well visualised solution development. I do still recommend however to validate both the results from the TLN workshops as well as the smart design roadmap with more people within Vanderlande as this currently only has been done by the team working on TLN.

When people experience pain, discomfort or motion limitation in their hip joint they can get a hip implant. This implant improves the movement and decreases the pain and discomfort. Due to several reasons such an implant needs revision after ten to fifteen years. This revision surgery is a long and invasive surgery. When an implant is fixated with bone cement this surgery is even more cumbersome. Research shows that the lifespan of cemented implants is better than uncemented, but because of the difficult surgery surgeons are choosing uncemented implants more often, leaving the patient with a lesser implant. The aim of this project is to improve hip revision surgery in such a way that surgeons would choose cemented implants over uncemented. Observing several surgeries, interviewing different stakeholders and reading literature showed that the main issue with cemented implants is the fixation of the new implant. This new implant needs a soilless surface to attach to. Removing the cement to ensure this clean surface is really hard, riskful and time consuming. Observations made clear that there is no strict procedure for this part of the surgery and that the amount of instruments meant for cement removal is almost endless. All the found insights were translated into the following design goal: Compose a minimal cement removal set of “my precious” instruments that could be used for HRS, that fits a fast, feasible, clear and safe cement removal procedure and lets the orthopaedic surgeon remove cement in a safe, efficient, confident and tangible way. To achieve this design goal a new procedure, a suitable minimal instrument set and a new cement removal instrument are designed. The procedure gives the surgeon more grip on the surgery and enables routine building. The instrument set supplies the surgeon with the right amount, not too much and not too little, of instruments needed to perform cement removal. And the Guido, a drill guide that helps the surgeon with removing the part of cement that is hardest to reach, makes the cement removal faster and more safe. The procedure and instrument set are discussed with medical professionals to validate whether it would solve the current problem. Besides that, a prototype of the Guido is made, which is tested on fake bones by three orthopaedic surgeons. The procedure, set and the Guido all were received very well and the surgeons could not wait to work with it. The concepts seem promising, but need further development. The materialization of the product needs to be finished and a CE certificate needs to be requested to be able to test it on cadavers.

This report comprises a strategical design graduation assignment, drafted for the Strategic Product Design master at the Delft University of Technology. The project is commissioned by boardsport lifestyle brand Brunotti. Project goal The many differences between Brunotti’s two product collections (boardsport hardware and boardsport lifestyle apparel) imply brand inconsistencies. This project aims to reveal these inconsistencies and, accordingly, propose a strategy that (1) helps eliminating the inconsistencies and (2) helps gaining competitive advantage. Literary substantiation Literature confirms the importance of consistency for Brunotti by supporting that offering a wide variety of products has a positive effect on a brand’s perception, but only if the overall message it embodies is consistent. Besides a brand’s effort to convey a certain message, the customers’ character proves to play an important role in how a brand is perceived and, as a result, how likely they are to accept brand extensions. Brand analysis The message that Brunotti wants to convey can be traced back to its origin in many ways, despite the several major operational changes that the company has gone through. Whereas the brand was founded from a single man’s (Claudio Brunotti) passion for windsurfing, it is now an internationally well-established corporate. Despite this large transformation, Brunotti stayed close to Claudio’s love for boardsports and sense for fashion design and high-quality products. At the very core of Brunotti’s intended message are the values ‘Authentic’, ‘Active’, and ‘Innovative’. ‘Authenticity’ embodies the brand’s rich heritage, ‘Active’ embodies the boardsport lifestyle that the brand propagates, and ‘Innovative’ embodies the aim for technical products that set new standards. Secondly, at the core of Brunotti’s identity is the philosophy ‘No Matter The Conditions’. The philosophy calls to embrace the forces of the elements, the ever-changing weather conditions and unpredictable seasons. The third important part of Brunotti’s intended message is the brand’s desire of becoming a more premium brand. Being an premium brand typically means being well-known, taking position in the high-end of the market and conveying high-quality. Brand perception analysis A quantitative research among Brunotti’s (potential) hardware and apparel customers is conducted in the form of an online questionnaire. The research is setup to reveal the gaps between Brunotti’s intended and the perceived message. Thus, it aims to disclose inconsistencies in what Brunotti wants to be and what they are in the eyes of the customer. Somewhat 200 responses reveal that the most critical inconsistencies (gaps) between Brunotti’s intended and perceived identity do not occur between the two customer segments (hardware and apparel), nor between the perception of the two product collections (hardware and apparel). The most critical gaps occur between the customers’ overall perception and Brunotti’s intentions in term of: Quality. The perceived quality is not low, but still consistently lower than intended. To reach a premium brand status, a higher perceived quality is desirable. Innovative character. The brand Brunotti and its products are perceived as far less innovative than intended. Being one of Brunotti’s core values, this sense of innovativeness needs to become much stronger in the minds of the customer. Philosophy. The brand perception analysis indicates a lower association with reliability and honesty than intended. This denotes a mismatch with Brunotti’s philosophy to support their customers ‘No Matter The Conditions’. The Solution Space The solutions to closing the identified gaps are to exist in the solution space that derived from the brand perception analysis. This virtual space is where high quality and innovative product features, that are applicable to Brunotti hardware- and apparel products, support their customers’ lifestyle ‘No Matter The Conditions’. Hereto, over a hundred boardsport lifestyle pains are identified in an exploratory session with four boardsport practitioners. To come up with innovative solutions for these pains, smart materials served as input for several creative problem-solving sessions. The ‘No Matter The Conditions’ philosophy is the final piece to the puzzle. From this philosophy, the ‘Embrace the Elements’ strategy emerged. The ‘Embrace the Elements’ strategy employs the four basic elements (sun, air, earth and water) to classify, not only the proposed product features, but also Brunotti’s products, and the boardsports that are the very reason for existence of the brand. In this way, Brunotti conveys a consistent message on all three levels, namely; Product-feature ideas The strategy is employable to the brand-core-, and product-level through mere classification. How the strategy is employable on a product-feature level becomes concrete in the ideation phase of this project. A large number of - element - product feature ideas proved the versatility of the ‘Embrace the Element’ strategy. Some ideas are of course better than others. Therefore, a selection is made together with Brunotti’s Head of Design and Development Director. Moreover, one of the selected ideas is brought into a further stage of development and prototyped as a real-life showcase of the strategy’s capability of driving innovation. Strategic implementation The applicability of the features to both product collections and planning are of great importance for the strategic implementation. An overview of the features’ applicability (to hardware and apparel products) helps showcasing their suitability for creating consistency throughout Brunotti’s product portfolio. Depending on the complexity of the idea and the readiness of the technology it holds, some ideas can be put to market quicker than others. Subsequently, a product feature-introduction-planning is proposed. Keeping Brunotti’s minimal develop period in mind, the first ‘Embrace the Elements’ strategy’s product features can be introduced to the market in 2020. Product-feature showcase A prototype of an integrated vacuum compartment in a Brunotti trolley, that allows users to take more luggage, showcases an ‘air’-class innovative product. It showcases the strategy’s capability of driving innovation. Moreover, the prototype allows Brunotti to communicate the idea to manufacturers, and thus accelerates the development process. Finalisation The report concludes with a confident note on the ‘Embrace the Elements’ strategy’s capability of achieving the project’s goals, depending on how well the strategy is implemented. It than gives some recommendation on the first steps to take for this implementation. Though some limitations in the research’ setup and distribution, and strategy’s implementation are identified, there is no reason to assume that they cancel out the value of the project’s outcomes.

Many people have certain dreams for their far future besides living a comfortable life, such as owning a vacation house or taking a long trip. However, most people do not have financial plans. The lack of having such plans decreases the chance of these wishes and goals to be realised.Although the majority starts saving for their retirement above the age of 40, studies show that it is more beneficial to invest earlier in life. According to an analysis by the World Economic Forum (2018), delaying retirement savings by just five years, at age 27 instead of 22, results in a retirement account 18% smaller. Starting with savings later, even in higher amounts, rarely outperforms earlier savings with compounding interest. Encouraging young generations to long-term saving, even if for small amounts, provides opportunities to significantly improve retirement outcomes and anticipate the future of investment behaviour (World Economic Forum, 2017, 2018). The challenge, however, is to effectively engage young people, age 22 or younger, to participate in the first place. The selected target group are late adolescents between the ages of 16 to 18 with a Money Mindset of Controller or Future Planner based on their Financial Behaviour. This target group seems the best likely to adopt saving behaviour that enables young people to be better equipped for the far future before other pressing expenses hijack their willingness to retirement investment. There are currently 624.459 young people of age 16,17 and 18 in the Netherlands (CBS, 2018). According to the percentages above, 156.114 people should have the mindset of a Controller, and 103.035 of Future Planner. Together there will be 259.149 young people to motivate and engage with retirement investing. Based on the findings in this research, young people desire to either retire early at age 55, or fulfil their need for self-actualisation: living to one's full potential. What they need is having support in setting a realistic retirement age and income goals as well as professional, genuine advice from personal experiences. INFINITY is a far future exploration tool with the focus on increasing young people's awareness for the far future through motivation, engagement, reflection and perspective-taking. This is done with retirement experts, whose role are to support users in their needs. INFINITY is deliberately designed as light and playful tool; with a low threshold and game-like elements to trigger young people and make it easy for them to start exploring their far future (Eyal and Hoover, 2014; Fogg, 2009). The tool will gently guide users through several steps, called 'The Journey', based on The Path of Expression (Sanders & Stappers, 2012). The Path of Expression is a method that explains how the present (now) connects to the past and the future through memories and dreams. It describes the path as guiding awareness in "steps of thinking of the present first, then the past, then looking for underlying layers, in order to move towards the future" (Sanders & Stappers, 2012, pp. 55). The Journey triggers users throughout the product flow to perform small tasks and engage in conversation with their retirement expert. The design intends to have users reflect and explore other perspectives regarding retirement, instead of postponing it. The benefits of this showcase is its direct link to users. It includes the advantage for the company of shortcutting the current route, which is for clients to identify opportunities first and then pass it on to Yellowtail. Having a direct link enables the company to respond to user demand and present clients with innovative, user-oriented propositions quickly. This showcase also increase in the company’s knowledge about target groups with a thorough understanding of a new and young target group under the age of 25. The showcase includes users’ values, needs and wishes concerning the far future. It supports the company with developing differentiated, user-oriented value propositions. As for the clients, with this proposal they are able to increase the quality of the financial life of their consumers significantly and to be distinct and ahead of the competition. This user-driven showcase for a generation of savers represents an opportunity for any financial services company to renew and revitalise its brand. INFINITY is designed to motivate and engage young people for far future exploration and investment. It provides clients with the opportunity to connect with users and provide them with additional services and tools that further support their needs and wishes.

Lots of people go camping to submerge in nature to break with their busy daily routine. Current camping shelters do not seem to support the desired nature experience of these campers. While protecting these campers from external conditions the shelters closes the campers off from the outdoors they came for. This led to the following hypothesis: Current camping shelters do not fit the desired nature camping experience. By researching campers and their context this hypothesis is confirmed. Besides confirming the hypothesis the research gave two other noteworthy insights about the desired camping experience. Firstly, the research showed that these campers like to have the possibility to make a camping spot their own. Secondly, it was indicated that they want to have the possibility to retreat in this own created place, secluding themselves form the outdoors. Combining these findings with a future shelter and interaction vision led to the following design goal: To design a shelter where the feeling of being outside and inside merge smoothly into one another, giving the user the opportunity to seclude from and submerge in their surrounding. Meanwhile enabling the user to break with their daily routine and make a shelter and by that, making their camping spot their own, in a mindful and exploratory manner. The concept designed based on this design goal is a modular shelter named the LUCID. The LUCID consists of seven components, which can be configured in multiple ways. Four configurations are designed during this project; other possible configurations are left to the user. Giving them the option to make the shelter and camping spot their own. Each of the four designed configurations can be opened and closed from the inside to ensure the user that they can both submerge in and seclude from the surroundings. To answer the question whether or not it is a good idea to continue developing the LUCID (after completing this graduation project) a concept evaluation research is carried out. Based on this evaluation and the opinion of a consulted camping and outdoor specialist the advise on continuing the development of the LUCID is positive.

The objective of this thesis was to bridge the gap between the municipality of The Hague and the residents with lower digital proficiency, by answering the main research question: How can less digitally proficient residents be included in resident research? stadskamer & inclusive resident research his project was carried out in collaboration with the municipality of The Hague, specifically The Stadskamer. The Stadskamer is part of the municipality-wide expertise centre of the Innovation and Services team. Here, residents can provide feedback and share ideas about municipal services, actively participating in their improvement. The Stadskamer uses resident research to examine how the municipality can improve its services. They believe in the potential of inclusive resident research: this type of research focuses on reaching and involving residents who are usually underrepresented in resident research. The Stadskamer works hard towards inclusive resident research, yet the reality is still different. Many groups have not yet been involved in research, preventing (policy) decisions from being made that align with reality. Context One of the underrepresented groups were residents with lower digital proficiency. This group was not very visible for the Stadskamer and they had little means to effectively involve them in resident research. Their current research strategy was not working. There is also a dearth of literature specifically addressing the needs of digitally less proficient residents. This research therefore focused on bridging the gap between existing literature and practice and design a strategy-based intervention for the municipality to contribute to a better and more inclusive approach to resident research. Approach In order to design the intervention, I conducted literature- and desk research, and I embarked on an exploratory journey to discover the best strategic approach. I used experiential learning as a central methodology. It consists of four stages: experiencing, reflecting, thinking, and acting. This approach aligns well with the needs of conducting inclusive research, as it emphasizes learning from direct experiences and observing the actions and consequences of others. Design results The final design concept is the strategy for involving less digitally proficient residents in resident research, including research tools, presented in the form of a handbook. This handbook provides all the practical guidelines needed to successfully conduct research with less digitally proficient residents. The strategy consists of five building blocks, each representing a step in the process of including the target group in research. These include identifying, reaching, approaching and involving less digitally proficient residents, and providing feedback. Conclusion Applying this strategy, showed that it is feasible, viable and desirable. It can be concluded that the final design successfully provides the Stadskamer with a strategic approach that facilitates the inclusion of digitally less proficient residents in the resident research. This thesis also contributes to the field of science and design as it validates and generates knowledge that is directly applicable. The findings provide a basis for the development of more effective municipal policies and address the gap in existing literature by providing specific information on conducting research with this target group.

This report describes the design of a wrist protector for professional soccer goalkeepers. This project was part of the master’s thesis for the TU delft and has been performed in collaboration with Norbert Alblas and the Fieldlab UPPS. Due to the increasing intensity of the game, injuries are becoming more common among goalkeepers. These include finger, hand and wrist injuries, which have a five times higher occurrence in goalkeepers than in any other player on the field. The goal of this project was therefor to design a strong, comfortable and reliable form of wrist protection for the professional goalkeeper, that they can wear with their goalkeeping gloves. The wrist protector should limit the critical movements while still allowing enough range of motion for the goalkeeper to perform their tasks. On top of this, the wrist protector should be easily donned and doffed and should last the goalkeeper for at least two years. Literature research, interviews with experts and tests were performed to learn more about the context, stakeholders and injuries. Through a survey (n=18) it was found that the majority of the goalkeepers had sustained a wrist injury before and tried to protect their wrists from further injuries. A range of motion test showed that goalkeepers need movement in the flexion direction to perform their tasks. Through literature research and interviews with a hand therapist it was found that the extension direction has to be obstructed to avoid hyper extension of the wrist as this the most common cause of wrist injuries. After creating a current and envisioned use scenario as well as a program of requirements, many ideas were created through brainstorming, sketching and prototyping. Six concept directions were evaluated with a hand therapist, a professional goalkeeper and a list of wishes derived from the program of requirements. The final concept is a personalized wrist protector that uses collision between protection pieces, positioned on the back of the hand, to limit movements in the extension direction. The concept consists of four layers with the top layer being the protection pieces. The protection pieces are designed to create a smooth arc into the limited extension position. Using a parametric model and a 3D scan of the goalkeeper’s wrist, a fully personalized wrist protector was made. The protection pieces are connected to a non stretch fabric layer to allow for flexion of the wrist. Underneath the fabric layer is a thin rubber layer that dampens the movements. The last layer is an under-glove that ensures correct placement and easy donning and doffing of the wrist protector. The design has been evaluated based on the use scenario and program of requirements as well as through testing with a professional goalkeeper and an interview with a hand therapist. The final concept was perceived as a wrist protector with great potential in its functionality. Especially the freedom of movement in the flexion and deviation directions was described as beneficial compared to other preventative techniques and wrist braces.

This thesis project explores how to maintain students' motivation to learn with the e-learning platform Platzi. Latin American EdTech company Platzi provides online courses related to jobs in the digital economy to a Spanish-speaking audience. Despite many new benefits of e-learning, like on-demand learning, it also comes with new challenges like isolation of learners, lack of community and lack of accountability, which leads to decreasing motivation for learning. The focus is primarily on students who want to find their place in an ever-getting, more dynamic world and guide them to define what they want in life. Making big life decisions like what career to focus on, where one wants to be in ten years, or what one even wishes to do is extremely difficult for everyone. But especially for young students that learn isolated. Despite Platzi's great work of forming a unity with their students, there is a significant shortage of guidance in online environments, and students often feel uninspired and without direction. Seeking a structured framework, the Japanese concept of Ikigai was identified as a starting point to help individuals develop clarity in life and increase their general well-being. This framework would enable students to learn how to use their skills best, allow them to follow their passions, and improve the lives of others while building a stable economic foundation. A new adapted purpose-finding service was developed to help students set goals based on their responses and connect these goals to courses to make the path ahead as tangible as possible. After rounds of experimentation with different approaches, one concept emerged, considering the context and the interests of all stakeholders. The work was partly executed in Colombia and part remotely in the Netherlands (collaboration with Platzi, user interviews, workshops, and user tests). User research was performed through interviews, surveys, and a workshop at all project stages. The final solution of this graduation project is an app feature that integrates into the existing platform. It allows students to discover opportunities by taking a playful quiz that points out further self-improvement activities and suggests courses to achieve the identified goals. By utilizing the strengths of Ikigai and simplifying it to reach a broad audience, it engages users and makes Platzi a holistic e-learning provider to transform Latin America.

VerdraaidGoed is a circularity consultancy with expertise in upcycling the waste of organisations. They are growing rapidly, and a scalable approach would be advantageous, so the company can expand without compromising performance and revenue. The assignment of this thesis is to find the best approach for the activities of VerdraaidGoed. Research was conducted in two areas: a literature review was done, and existing practices were observed and questioned extensively. The literature study resulted in aspects that would be beneficial to include in the design, such as flexibility, setting criteria, planning and reflection, encouraging leadership, and guiding to a result that is competitive, healthy for human welfare, environmentfriendly, and stimulates entrepreneurship. From the broad company and project analysis, a deep understanding of the upcycle projects arose. These projects have three stages: advice, development and sale. The approach used in the advice stage is the focus of this thesis and was observed thoroughly. It involves scanning a client organisation, looking for the potential of produced waste and giving advice on how to deal with the waste. From this, gaps in the approach and used tools were discovered. The opportunities for improvement include the assessment of all materials, equal elaboration of all results, adding more tools and creating a possibility for integration with a database. Next to the observations, interviews were held with all user types of the approach. That resulted in the extra notes that the approach could be shareable and clear visuals were needed to convey the approach and steps within it. The synthesis of all the insights lead to three overarching themes: clear structure, effective design, efficient resources. These three themes summarise what the final design of the approach needs to inherit. With these three themes, a very iterative design process was completed which resulted in a final design. The final design consists of one metaphor, two approaches, six processes, ten tools and thirty-one activities. The metaphor, approach and processes are visuals, because quick understandability is its decisive function. The activities and tools are elaborated in an instruction manual form, with accessible instructions to follow and easy to use tools. This project resulted in an approach tailored to VerdraaidGoed with scalability possibilities, which will allow VerdraaidGoed to grow without compromising themselves, so they can become a worldwide expert on circularity and upcycling in particular.

Hemophilia, a bleeding disorder, is divided into types A and B, resulting from coagulation factors VIII and IX deficiencies. The levels of these clotting factors in the body determine the severity of hemophilia. The classification includes severe, moderate, and mild hemophilia. Managing hemophilia involves options like on-demand and prophylactic treatment. A key part of managing this condition involves Hemophilia Treatment Centers (HTCs) as the primary healthcare providers for patients. The HTC at Erasmus MC is one of the six centers in the Netherlands. It offers comprehensive care for adults and children with hemophilia and other rare bleeding disorders. In the pediatric department of Erasmus MC's HTC, children with hemophilia attend multiple outpatient clinic visits annually. During these visits, patients and their caregivers receive education about the bleeding disorder, its treatment, and potential consequences. However, grasping the information during these visits can be challenging, especially as most of it is conveyed verbally. This poses a particular difficulty for patients and caregivers with lower literacy levels. To enhance the information provided to hemophilia patients and caregivers, HTCs must offer comprehensive support to ensure patients understand the information communicated during outpatient clinic visits. Improving information provision in these contexts aims to make significant progress towards a future where patient information and education are improved, resulting in better outcomes for those living with hemophilia. This graduation project involved conducting research through literature reviews, analyzing materials, observing HTC's operations, and interviewing healthcare professionals, patients and their caregivers, and relevant stakeholders. The findings revealed several pain points regarding the current information provision. These areas include the information exchanged during outpatient clinic visits and the accessibility of provided information outside of these visits. Consequently, two solutions were developed: an information tool named "Samen Spraak," designed to enhance information exchange between healthcare professionals and parents by introducing interactivity and structure during consultations. This tool is then detailed in a strategy outlining a digital solution's implementation roadmap. Based on this developed tool and strategy, it is advisable to classify it under the Dutch Association for Hemophilia Patients (NVHP) for further implementation and testing. Future research could explore expanding the approach to other blood clotting disorders across all age groups.

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is one typical type of chronic Neuromuscular Dystrophy. This type of disease necessitates network care because it is complex and necessitates a network of diverse healthcare expertise to reduce the negative effects of the disease and rehabilitate the patient to live a more normal life. As a result, effective communication and collaboration among various healthcare members become an important part of the overall patient experience. Based on the user research, it can be found that patients often encounter problems during their treatment, but they often cannot get proper help quickly due to the slow reply time of the healthcare professionals. Also, because of the difference in the know-how of the disease, the communication towards the patient is not summarized as one diagnosis and support session and in the end, they cannot get a complete answer from the healthcare team. Therefore, I want to design an online support platform to help FSHD patients get the right help in time during the treatment of their disease. The final design is an online support platform that aims to help patients solve their problems during the treatment and facilitate effective communications between patients and the healthcare network. The core of this service platform is to introduce a personalized coach to bridge the gap between the two sides. The platform has two main functions, treatment, and chat, which can meet most of the needs of a patient during the treatment process. In the treatment session, patients can follow the exercise videos based on their treatment plan made by the healthcare professionals. After they complete one exercise, the platform enables users to make a self-evaluation of their performance. When patients feel negative about the training, they can quickly inform this situation to the coach and the healthcare team by using the share function. Then they will receive comments on their recordings from the healthcare professionals so that they know how to adjust their actions. The chat function allows the patient to quickly ask questions and express their need when they encounter problems with their personalized coach. The coach will help to filter the question and inform the related healthcare professionals to discuss it in a chat group when needed. When the discussion ends, patients can get a summarized answer from the coach. Based on the usability test, it can be validated that the design can bring benefits to people. The two main features of the online platform (chat and treatment) were useful to the test subjects, and they expressed a willingness to use the platform if it will be developed in the future. However, there is still room for improvement. In the future, we can further think about enlarging the user group, such as involving more patients of other neuromuscular diseases and expanding the service, such as helping the customer to build their healthcare team to add more value to more people.

Supportive care, regardless of its diversity or who provides it, aims to enhance and preserve the quality of life and independence and to empower and optimize well-being (Fitch, 2008). We can see that digital health can benefit supportive care by empowering users, providing more accessible support, and encouraging self-management. However, the impact of digital health interventions on existing organizations and systems is not always positive and effective. We could conclude that even with the rapid development of DHIs, physical or traditional interventions cannot be replaced entirely. That is to say, digital health intervention remains a viable option rather than a necessity, its purpose being to be a supplement and complement to the current medical system. (Yildiz & Oksuzoglu, 2020) This project explores how to connect digital and traditional care to create a seamless experience that fully embraces patients in cancer care when and where they need it. However, it is unclear how this hybrid model fits in the context of the supportive care plan. To understand how to build such a hybrid patient journey, we decided to research the types of problems in SCP and think about what role the DHIs could play. To gain a more systematic understanding, we researched three groups of people: patients, health professionals, and medical experts. The result of the research led to a picture of the current patient journey, which helped us identify opportunities for intervention. We believe the DHIs can help alleviate the current pressure on the system and provide patients with timely, adequate and effective supportive care. However, it must be based on providing patients with digital care that fits their situation. Based on this, we designed the future patient journey. It shows how digital care can be combined with traditional care. Also, it includes 1) the opportunities to involve more DHIs in SCP; 2) the concept of the AI support system to help the HCPs decide the care plan. In addition to this, an extensive validation study has proven that the new patient journey has the potential to help the patients access care and increase their well-being. Also, the AI support system could help HCPs make decisions and reduce their workload. The whole project started with women with breast cancer. However, in the interviews, we found that this could apply to other cancer care where the patient can use the digital tool.

New, innovative technologies are important. More and more companies are using digital technologies to their benefit. The act of leveraging such digital technologies to enable organisational improvements in a strategic way is called a digital transformation. In such transformations, the customer experience, operational processes and business models need to be reconfigured in order to get ahead of the forces for change in the digital age. If a company only focuses on technology, the transformation might fail, as also the daily work of people will change due to the digital transformation. Therefore, also human-centric challenges need to be tackled in a digital transformation strategy. In order to create value with new digital technologies in a transformation program, it is important to understand needs of the people affected by the new digital technologies. The extent to which needs are met determines what value is attached to the digital artefact. Therefore, many strategies exist for uncovering user needs and involving users in the sense-making of the research topics for new product development. However, no strategies exist that tell how to combine such co-creation with software development to better meet user needs with features of digital artefacts. This provides new opportunities for the development of a co-creation framework for software development. This thesis explores how to incorporate co-creation in agile software development. This is done for the department of a European-based airline. By involving their users in the creation of digital artefacts, the company will better know what users want and increase the value created with the artefacts of the digital transformation program. Currently, this airline uses the Scrum framework to develop iPad applications. They find user needs but do not manage to translate those needs into the right product backlog items for the software development. Product backlog items are descriptions of user needs that explain to the development team what needs to be made in the application features. This thesis, therefore, answers the following research question: How can co-creation be used to give support during the translation of user needs into product backlog items? This research question is answered by following a double diamond design process, that includes both research activities and design experiments to create insights needed to answer the research question. A detailed literature review is conducted the understand the current context of co-creation, value creation and software development. Moreover, two ethnographic studies are performed to understand the company’s context and problem that is being faced. The research insights are translated in a co-creation framework outline. Based on this framework a co-creation process and several tools that together serve as a design solution are developed. This process and tools are designed based on several creative sessions and experiments that reveal what design principles do and do not work. Finally, a framework evaluation test is performed in the hangar environment, validating the principles of the design solution. Based on the evaluation insights, the design solution is extended, and recommendations for implementation and further research are given.
