Enormous water-logging in ancient abandoned mining shafts of Kolar Gold Fields (KGFs), has largely induced the leaching of sulfide-rich gold minerals contaminating the aquifer system with hazardous elements. Transport of these contaminant has posed threat to the health of the urban population of Kolar township. A detailed survey of borewells, covering radius of 10 km of the KGF was carried out during pre and post-monsoon seasons and various parameters were assessed. Almost 80% of the water samples exceeded the regulatory limits of potable water criteria with excess arsenic (As; 12–127 μg/L), fluoride (F; <0.005 μg/L), dissolved salts (>500 mg/L). Water Quality Index (WQI) was used to understand the overall urban groundwater quality. At the centre of sampling circle core, mineral dissolution was found to be the function of pH, induced by acidophilic sulfur oxidizing bacteria. Modelling of predicted microbial metabolic pathways in metagenomics libraries using PICRUSt, indicated complex functional networks. High expression of siderophore proteins (> 2 cm halo in the chrome azurol test) caused Fe-sequestration, secondary Fe-mineral formation and subsequent release of As. Sulfide bearing Au-rich minerals (Arsenopyrite, Scorodite, Jarosite) were bio-weathered leading to release of H3AsO3+ at low pH, resulted in groundwater composition of Ca–HCO3 type and Ca–Na–HCO3 or Ca–Mg–Cl type.@en

Human migration in response to past climate change has been recorded globally. The pastoralist Todas are believed to have colonised the higher elevations (>2000 m asl) of the Nilgiris, Western Ghats, India, after ∼2000 cal. yr BP. During the late Quaternary, climate-induced vegetation shifts in tropical montane forest-grassland mosaic of the Nilgiris have been well-documented using stable carbon isotopes and pollen, but there have been no corresponding investigations of human activity. We used several proxies to infer the human ecology of this region. Radiocarbon-dated (∼22,000 cal. yr BP to the present) peat from Sandynallah (2200 m asl) was used to reconstruct fire history, animal abundance, and human presence since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). While macro-charcoal records fires at the LGM, macro- and micro-charcoal indicate intense fire at ∼3500 cal. yr BP, coprophilous fungal spores indicate abundant herbivorous mammals, n-alkane signatures point to arid grassland vegetation, and steroid biomarkers show human faecal remains for the first time. We infer that a pastoralist people, most likely the Todas, migrated to the montane Nilgiris along with their buffaloes in response to prolonged or abrupt climate change in peninsular India ∼3500 cal yr BP or ~1500 years prior to what historical accounts assume.@en

Contaminated food chain is a serious contender for arsenic (As) uptake around the globe. In Nadia, West Bengal, we trace possible means of transfer of As from multiple sources reaching different trophic levels, and associated seasonal variability leading to chronic As uptake. This work considers possible sources-pathways of As transfer through food chain in rural community. Arsenic concentration in groundwater, soil, rice, and vegetable-samples collected detected in different harvest seasons of 2014 and 2016. Arsenic level in shallow groundwater samples ranged from 0.1 to 354 µg/L, with 75% of the sites above the prescribed limit by WHO (10 µg/L) during the boro harvest season. High soil As content (∼20.6 mg/kg), resulted in accumulation of As in food crops. A positive correlation in As conc. with increase over period in all sites indicating gradual As accumulation in topsoil. Unpolished rice samples showed high As content (∼1.75 mg/kg), polishing reduced 80% of As. Among vegetables, the plant family Poaceae with high irrigation requirements and Solanaceae retaining high moisture, have the highest levels of As. Contaminated animal fodder (Poaceae) and turf water for cattle are shown to contaminate milk (0.06 to 0.24 µg/L) and behoves strategies, practices to minimize As exposure.@en
