HYCOOL presents the conceptual design of a hybrid-electric regional aircraft powered by liquid hydrogen and superconducting propulsion technologies. The aircraft features wing-mounted distributed open-fan propulsion, hydrogen-fuelled gas turbogenerators, a cryogenic thermal management system, and an aft-fuselage liquid hydrogen storage tank. The design integrates aerodynamic optimization, electrical power system redundancy, hydrogen cooling, and advanced storage solutions to achieve high efficiency and reduced emissions. Key challenges such as thermal management, hydrogen storage, manufacturability, and system reliability were addressed through detailed subsystem design and sensitivity analysis. Results indicate that the proposed architecture is technically feasible, robust against key uncertainties, and offers significant potential for sustainable aviation, while highlighting critical manufacturing and operational challenges for future implementation.
