Background: Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) drying relies on the generation of a corona wind that is created with a high electric potential between an emitter and a ground electrode. The impinging corona wind enhances convective heat and mass transport close to the sample, which is positioned on the ground electrode. Although EHD drying is reported to have large potential for milder and energy efficient drying, most studies have only evaluated its potential at the lab scale and for specific applications. Scope and approach: This review focusses on discussing the underlying physical phenomena that may be expected to influence the performance of EHD drying processes. Specifically, we discuss how corona wind changes due to discharge behaviour as it is influenced by moisture release during drying, how the microstructural properties of the product could influence electromigration in the drying material and how EHD drying could be efficiently and safely scaled up for biobased & food products. We conclude with an outlook to the research that still is required to concretize the potential of EHD drying in practice. Key findings and conclusions: In EHD drying, electrical discharge induces airflow which enhances external convective drying. Studies coupling physical phenomena are still lacking, although some possible couplings are mentioned in chapter 2. Internal mass transfer is enhanced due to presence of an electrical potential over the product, which can cause several electrically-driven transport phenomena as discussed in chapter 3. Several drying setups have been explored in industry, of which the characteristics are summarized in chapter 4.

The environmental footprint of concrete is largely influenced by the binder. It is therefore of high interest to investigate the potential reuse of the binder retrieved by modern separation techniques. However, studies found that the recycled cement fraction (RCF) still contained a certain amount of siliceous concrete aggregates, which forms an obstacle in the upcycling of RCF. In this study, the potential of electrostatic separation as a method to separate cementitious binder (hydrated and unhydrated) and sand (silica) is evaluated. Different cementitious powders and silica (sand) were prepared, resulting in a total of 9 powders and 8 mixtures. The mixtures consisted of a combination of silica and one of the cementitious powders (50/50 wt%) with a particle size of the components <125 μm. The potential of the studied technique was evaluated through charging measurements and x-ray fluorescence (XRF). Silica was assumed to contain no CaO and the detected CaO was therefore assigned to the cementitious powders. Results showed that silica and silica-rich fly ash (FA) particles became negatively charged, blast furnace slag (BFS) particles remained largely charge neutral and all other cementitious particles obtained a positive charge. Through electrostatic separation an enrichment of the cementitious binder fraction for all mixtures was obtained at the negative electrode. FA-Silica achieved the highest enrichment (89.9%), CEM III/B-Silica the lowest (4.7%) and the hydrates were enriched ranging from 28.0 to 31.8%.

Pneumatic conveying of particles is generally applied in large ducts. However, new applications are emerging which benefit from millimeter-sized ducts; for example, triboelectric separators where intensive wall-particle contact is desirable. An optical method is proposed to measure the distribution of the position and velocity of 100-1000 μm particles in such narrow ducts. Images of the system are captured using a digital camera on which a Hough transform is applied to detect the particles and their positions. The velocities are acquired by applying a hybrid particle tracking and particle image velocimetry approach. This made it is possible to overcome challenges caused by suboptimal lighting, nonsmooth background, and a large ratio between particle and duct diameter (>O(0.1)). It is shown that the algorithm is subpixel accurate when sufficient particles can be sampled. Finally, typical results are shown to illustrate the method's capabilities.

A soft-sphere discrete particle model was used to simulate mixing behavior of solid substrate particles in a slow rotating drum for solid-state fermentation. In this approach, forces acting on and subsequent motion of individual particles can be predicted. The (2D) simulations were qualitatively and quantitatively validated by mixing experiments using video and image analysis techniques. It was found that the simulations successfully predicted the mixing progress as a function of the degree of filling and size of the drum. It is shown that only relatively large, straight baffles perpendicular to the drum wall (67% of the drum radius) increase the mixing performance of the rotating drum. Considering the different aspects of mixing dealt with in this work, it is concluded that the soft sphere discrete particle model can serve as a valuable tool for investigating mixing of solid substrate particles. Finally, it is expected that this model may evolve into a potential tool for design and scale-up of mixed solid-state fermenters.
