The National Museum of Raqqa in Syria has suffered immensely from the ongoing violence since 2011. Much of its valuable collection of movable archaeological heritage (ca. 6000 items) is considered lost. Starting from 500 of the most precious objects of the museum stored in the Raqqa Central Bank and stolen from there in 2013, the pilot project Focus Raqqa created a concrete, workable database to enable identification by Syrian and international police and heritage institutions. The project made a pivotal first step towards potential reconstruction of the Raqqa Museum in the future. The Raqqa museum collection included cuneiform tablets. Some of the tablets were cast before the war to allow detailed study in Europe. Today the tablets have vanished. The pilot project Scanning for Syria safeguarded information from the lost artefacts by making high-resolution three-dimensional scans of the silicone rubber moulds and subsequently physical replicas of the original objects by 3D printing. The short life expectancy (30 years) of the moulds necessitated measures for long- 3 term preservation. The Scanning for Syria team not only succeeded at the preservation and sharing of knowledge in the academic circle. It also told the story of Syrian culture and its people to everyone for raising more voices in the united effort to keep cultural heritage safe in a zone of conflict.@en

Mass Personalisation (MP) is becoming more significant to answer diversifying customer needs, as a result of the advancements in digital manufacturing. In contrary to the modular design in mass customisation, Design for MP (DfMP) proposes more profound changes in product and active user involvement in the design process, while maintaining mass efficiency. Traditional product development methodologies fall short in guiding MP, as it has the distinct differences with product variability and the customer involvement with specific needs. In this study, a dedicated design methodology for MP is presented, focussing on these key dimensions. The proposed methodology guides the designer through the development process of a user modifiable design and demonstrates how to facilitate the user involvement in reaching a personalised design. It proposes a flexible and adaptable seed design architecture, and an interactive customer co-creation process. The development of a seed design, construction of its design space, and management of the solution space with a design solution algorithm are elaborated. The application of the methodology was illustrated on the personalisation of knitted footwear, and 3D printed saxophone mouthpiece. The examples show the potential of the methodology to deal with coupled MP cases. A systematic approach to DfMP will allow expanding MP to more products, and acts as a foundation for the customer co-creation oriented design in the context of this emerging paradigm.@en

The causes and treatment solutions of congenital heart defects are difficult to address and discuss between patient and doctor. This is mainly due to the complex spatial nature of congenital cardiac defects, which makes it difficult for the patients to envision the defect without prior anatomical knowledge and renders the comprehension largely dependent on doctors' (variable) skills to describe the anomaly. To improve communication, 3D printed hearts have been developed, yet these are expensive, difficult to manage for the large collection of defects, and require substantial oral explanation. In addition, the correlation with cardiac function remains rather abstract. Instead, we propose an augmented reality solution, involving a see-through head-mounted display (HMD) extended with a built-in heart rate monitor. In order to increase the presence and the conversational power, the heartbeat of the patient is used to drive an animation of a supersized, floating heart visualisation; enabling the user to inspect a specific heart condition from all sides. To enable this, a universal add-on casing was developed for the HoloLens. Heuristic analysis and pilot tests with $6+15$ participants reveal limitations of the implementation and show that the solution does increase comprehension, although more has to be done to enable a robust system.@en
