Urged by a close future perspective of a traffic flow made of a mix of human-driven vehicles and automated vehicles (AVs), research has recently focused on studying the traffic flow characteristics of Adaptive Cruise Controls (ACCs), the most typical AV. However, in most works, the ACC system is studied under a simplifying and unrealistic assumption, or the ACC system modeled is inaccurate. This paper proposes a general hierarchical control system to model ACC systems with several assumptions based on the deficiencies above. Moreover, a field experiment was conducted, and the corresponding experimental data was used to verify the proposed hierarchical control system and assumptions. In addition, string stability is explored along with sensitivity analyses of control parameters based on an example under the constant time gap policy. The results show that different upper-level controller parameters have different delays, where the delay of the speed is negligible; the introduction of actuator delay and lag in the lower-level controller can significantly improve the model goodness of fit. Furthermore, optimizing the delay and lag in the lower-level controller can significantly enhance the string stability of ACCs than optimizing the control parameters.@en

Traffic flow downstream of the congestion is generally lower than the pre-queue capacity. This phenomenon is called the capacity drop. Recent empirical observations show a positive relationship between the speed in congestion and the queue discharge rate. Literature indicates that variations in driver behaviors can account for the capacity drop. However, to the best of authors' knowledge, there is no solid understanding of what and how this variation in driver behaviors lead to the capacity drop, especially without lane changing. Hence, this paper fills this gap. We incorporate the empirically observed desired acceleration stochasticity into a car-following model. The extended parsimonious car-following model shows different capacity drop magnitudes in different traffic situations, consistent with empirical observations. All results indicate that the stochasticity of desired accelerations is a significant reason for the capacity drop. The new insights can be used to develop and test new measures in traffic control.@en

For traffic flow models, calibration and validation are essential. Cellular automaton (CA) models are a special class of models, describing the movement of vehicles in discretised space and time. However, the previous work on calibration and validation does not discuss CA models systematically. This study calibrates and validates a stochastic CA model. The authors use a simple CA model, which only has two important parameters to be calibrated. The methodology for optimisation is to minimise the relative root mean square error between two properties: The averaged velocity and the variation of velocities in a platoon at a given density. Three different sites are used as cases to show the methodology, for which different types of data (video trajectories or GPS data) are available. The authors find that the best model parameters vary for the different locations. This may result from various driving strategies and potential tendencies. Thus, it is concluded that for CA models, various traffic flow phenomena need to be simulated by various parameters.@en
