Many new logistics initiatives arise based on the principles of resource sharing through crowdsourcing. Sharing unused and/or underused resources can deliver new efficiencies in the logistics value chain in an industry where efficiency is the name of the game. The benefits of applying sharing economy concepts in logistics in terms of higher efficiency, lower costs, less congestion and lower CO2 emissions seem easy to realize for both industry and society. While the sharing economy offers promising opportunities to start new businesses, the sharing economy is not without its challenges. Themes such as strict liability, insurance, transparency, and employee protection can hinder the progress of the sharing economy. Most difficult of all, the pace of technological innovation and social change often exceeds regulatory frameworks, resulting in banned services and protests from those working in traditional industries. Among five sectors in urban freight transport, i.e. city logistics, construction logistics, transportation & warehousing (retail logistics), healthcare logistics, and service logistics sharing concepts are studied over for the entire city of Rotterdam. Based on our main case study findings it can be observed that within the sectors of urban freight transport quite some differences exist with respect to the sharing maturity. Therefore a dedicated implementation plan is needed for each sector. This paper has shown what are the next steps to be taken for each sector and how the knowledge transfer can be established.@en

Today, companies recognize that the opportunities derived from the on-demand economy are becoming too big to miss. Like all major disruptions, on-demand economy start-ups are challenging industry incumbents with new business models and new ways of engaging customers. Existing companies need to embrace the on-demand economy and transform their service and delivery systems to meet consumer demand. The largest 750 cities in the world are responsible for more than 57% of the global gross domestic product (GDP) and this share is expected to increase to 61% by 2030. At the same time, in today's increasingly global and interconnected world, the share of e-commerce of total global retail sales is also expected to continue to increase, from 7.4% in 2015 to 15.5% in 2021. Furthermore, consumers have higher service expectations than ever before. E-tailers are stimulating and exploiting these service expectations by offering fast delivery options as a means to compete. The population growth and urbanization, the explosion of e-commerce, and the proliferation of fast delivery options, require innovative solutions and business models to ensure cost-effective, but also environmentally and socially friendly, transportation of goods. Within the logistics industry the sharing economy could be a disruptive development that could ideally render a major contribution in reducing the CO2 intensity of its operations . Sharing unused and/or underutilized resources, can unlock new efficiencies in the logistics value chain in an industry where efficiency is the name of the game. This paper addresses three practical sharing initiatives in the field of city logistics, shows the potential of sharing logistics in the domain of city logistics, and contains a description of a methodology how sharing concepts can be designed.@en

De noodzaak tot verduurzaming is groter dan ooit, eveneens in de logistiek. Dit houdt in dat ruimte beter benut moet worden, transport zero-emissie uitgevoerd dient te worden, bundelen een standaard zou moeten zijn en lage beladingsgraden tot het verleden behoren. Hubs spelen in de stadslogistiek een belangrijke rol hierin, bekende succesformules zijn CityHub, CityDepot, Goederenhubs Nederland, Hubbel en LessGo. Steden en grote gemeenten krijgen in het verduurzamen de prioriteit, maar hierdoor lijkt de verduurzamingsuitdaging te verschuiven naar kleinere en middelgrote gemeenten. De slagingskans van hubs in middelgrote gemeentes lijkt bij een eerste benadering kleiner dan in de grotere gemeenten en steden. Dit komt onder meer doordat er voldoende volumes aan te wenden zijn, het focus gebied relatief klein is en dat er actiever in wordt gezet op het terugdringen van binnenstedelijke bewegingen. Om deze reden zijn drie Zuid-Hollandse hubcases uit de gemeente Goeree-Overflakkee, Hoeksche Waard en Nissewaard nader beschouwd. Cruciale beïnvloedbare factoren om toch in middelgrote gemeentes te slagen zijn het creëren van en werken aan schaalgrootte, draagvlak, durf, onderling vertrouwen, een toekomstbestendig concept, uitzicht op rentabiliteit, een langere termijnvisie, een divers dienstenpalet, een overwogen locatiekeuze en gemeentelijke inbreng en steun. Een meewerkende, moeilijk beïnvloedbare factor, is de noodzaak van partijen deel te nemen aan een hubinitiatief. Kans van slagen is er dus zeker en starten kan iedereen, maar de hubformule succesvol rendabel voortzetten is de werkelijke uitdaging.@en
