Mismanaged plastic waste (MPW) is a major source of plastic pollution in rivers, particularly in regions with insufficient waste management infrastructure. Despite prior studies on MPW drivers, the entry points of MPW into riverine environments across the lifecycle of specific plastic items have not been assessed. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the lifecycle of the three most polluting plastic items, drinking water sachets, small bottles, and expanded polystyrene (EPS) food packaging in the Odaw catchment, located in Accra, Ghana to identify their critical entry points into the riverine environment. The Odaw is known for its high contribution to environmental plastic pollution due to the high anthropogenic activities, coupled with its inadequate waste management systems. Using a qualitative methodology, interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with 15 stakeholders involved in production, retail, consumption, waste management, and regulation across the plastic lifecycle. Data collected through audio recordings, were transcribed and analysed through inductive content analysis approach in ATLAS.ti. The findings reveal that all MPW entry points occur during post-consumption stages, with four of eight identified practices classified as high-impact. EPS packs was not recovered for recycling, bottles were exported overseas for recycling, and water sachets recovery faced challenges due to the low market prices and limited recycling capacity. This highlights the catchment's limited recycling infrastructure. The study provides localized insights for targeted mitigation strategies and support targeted monitoring efforts. Furthermore, it offers a replicable methodological framework for regions with limited waste operations data, serving as a baseline for data-rich regions.

Hydrometeorological processes are often assumed to be key drivers of plastic transport. However, the predominant focus on these factors overlooks the impact of anthropogenic factors, such as mismanaged plastic waste (MPW) on plastic transport variability. Here, we investigate the roles of both anthropogenic and hydrometeorological factors on plastic pollution in the Odaw catchment, Ghana. Data on macroplastic transport and density were collected at ten locations between December 2021 and December 2022. We tested for differences between the wet and dry seasons and applied a multiple regression analysis to examine the separate and combined impact of hydrometeorological variables (rainfall, discharge, and windspeed) on macroplastic transport. Additionally, we analyzed the spatial correlation in macroplastic transport/density with MPW and population density. Data collection involved visual counting of floating macroplastics at 10 river locations and counting litter at 9 riverbanks and land locations. Rainfall data was sourced from TAHMO (Trans-African Hydrometeorological Observatory), discharge was measured during field campaigns, and windspeed data sourced from a global climate data provider. We used globally modelled MPW estimates to represent anthropogenic factors. Contrary to previous studies, we found no seasonal differences in macroplastic pollution and only weak correlations were observed between the hydrometeorological variables and macroplastic transport. However, a strong correlation was observed between MPW and macroplastic pollution. We hypothesize that, the influence of hydrometeorological factors on macroplastic transport depend on the relative impact of anthropogenic factors. Our research highlights the limited role of hydrometeorology, showing the significant role of mismanaged plastic waste to field monitored macroplastic pollution variability in the catchment. This insight is essential for future research as it highlights the importance of holistically investigating both anthropogenic and hydrometeorological factors in explaining plastic transport and retention dynamics. This insight is essential for developing interventions that effectively address plastic pollution in catchments.

Catchment-scale plastic pollution assessments provide insights in its sources, sinks, and pathways. We present an approach to quantify macroplastic transport and density across the Odaw catchment, Ghana. We divided the catchment into the non-urban riverine, urban riverine, and urban tidal zones. Macroplastic transport and density on riverbanks and land were monitored at ten locations in December 2021. The urban riverine zone had the highest transport, and the urban tidal zone had the highest riverbank and land macroplastic density. Water sachets, soft fragments, and foam fragments were the most abundant items. Our approach aims to be transferable to other catchments globally.

Accurate precipitation observations are crucial for hydrological forecasts, notably over rapidly responding urban areas. This study evaluated the accuracy of three gridded spaceborne rainfall products (Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG), Meteosat Second Generation Visible (MSG-VIS), and MSG-Infrared (MSG-IR)) and the non-governmental Trans-African Hydro-Meteorological Observatory (TAHMO) gauges across the Odaw catchment (Accra, Ghana) from January 2020-July 2022. IMERG is hardly able to capture the strong spatial variability of rainfall required for flood forecasting, but agrees in annual sums with TAHMO and MSG-IR. MSG-IR has difficulties during the wet season. MSG-VIS, only available during daylight, shows limited accuracy and gives high estimates while other products do not detect rain. TAHMO gauges effectively record high-intensity events and their strong spatial variability, although some (daily) accumulations are doubtful and data gaps exist due to technical issues. These findings assist hydrological modelers in selecting appropriate datasets at suitable spatiotemporal resolutions for their research.

Plastic pollution in rivers threatens ecosystems, increases flood risk due to its accumulations at hydraulic structures and its final emissions into the ocean threaten aquatic life, especially and probably most in coastal urbanized areas. Previous work suggests that plastic pollution in these urban rivers is influenced by hydrometeorological and anthropogenic factors. However, the transport dynamics of the plastics in such rivers are non-linear and complex and remain largely unresolved. Here, we show that tidal dynamics can be the main driver of plastic transport closest to the river mouth. Outside the tidal zone, rainfall and river discharge were identified to be more important drivers. We monitored plastic transport in the Odaw river, Ghana during the dry season. The Odaw drains the densely populated city of Accra and discharges into the Gulf of Guinea. Data were collected between March and May 2021 (dry season), using visual counting at four bridges along the river, of which two were located within the tidal zone. We explored the correlations between river plastic transport, and rainfall, tidal dynamics, and river discharge. Finally, we estimated the total plastic mass transport by using item-to-mass conversion data from previously published literature. We observed a peak in plastic transport at the upstream bridge within the tidal zone after an increase in rainfall (7.3 times larger). We found a gradient of the hydrometeorological factors driving plastic transport. Closer to the river mouth, tidal dynamics were more strongly correlated with plastic transport than upstream. The daily mass transport was estimated to be between 1.4–3.8 × 10² kg/d, which is lower than previous model estimates. These results add to the evidence of inconsistent correlations between plastic transport and hydrometeorological variables. Long-term monitoring data is required to further investigate this. The results also support the hypothesis that tidal dynamics are a crucial factor in controlling the emissions of plastics from rivers into the ocean. The findings provide a baseline for the Odaw river during the dry season and allow for comparison with the wet season. The approach adopted here also serves as a blueprint for similar urban river systems, regionally and globally.

River catchments are important to consider when investigating the fate of plastics once introduced into the environment. However, plastic transport at the river catchment scale is rarely quantified. In this study, we present a catchment-scale field assessment of macroplastic litter in the Odaw (270 km2). The catchment was sub-divided into non-urban riverine, urban riverine and urban tidal zones based on the urbanisation level and riverine transport across the catchment. The riverine (river and riverbank) and terrestrial environments at ten locations along the catchment were monitored on three days in December, 2021. Floating litter items in the river were monitored by visual counting. At the riverbank and terrestrial environments, litter items were sampled in a designated area (5 x 2 m2) and categorised according to the River-OSPAR list (Schone-Rivieren, 2018). Results showed a high plastic flux (1125 items/h) in the urban riverine zone, which was higher by a factor of 16 and 2 to the plastic flux at the non-urban riverine and urban tidal zones, respectively. Terrestrial and riverbank plastic density was highest closest to the river mouth (urban tidal). The factor increase between the most upstream (non-urban riverine) and downstream (urban tidal) was larger for terrestrial than for riverbank. This shows the influence of urbanisation on the generation of mismanaged plastics in the catchment. Top three plastic polymer types observed in the catchment were PO soft, EPS and Multilayer. However, at each zone, the top three plastic polymer types varied with PO Soft as the most dominant at each zone. The highest abundance of PO soft, EPS and multilayer was found at the urban riverine (56%), urban tidal (31%) and non-urban riverine (24%) zones respectively. Our findings provide information on the spatial variation of plastic transport in the Odaw catchment and therefore can help create better strategies to manage the plastic pollution problem in this catchment. Future work will further explore the potential sources and temporal sink zones in the catchment.
