Op zolder gaat de tijd sneller

Abstract

Onze tijdservaring is lineair: van minuut tot minuut beleven we het verglijden van tijd. Wat achter ons ligt, beschouwen we als een afgerond verleden en wat voor ons ligt is een nog niet nader ontsloten toekomst. Naar het verleden kijken we met een nostalgische blik, en vol verwachting kijken we uit naar de toekomst. Dit kleurt ons beeld van architectuur in een historische context. Een ruïne verklaren we heilig: het is onze verbinding met voorouders, vervlogen tijden. Daar tegenover staat het nieuwe als voorbode van wat nog komen gaat.

Our experience of time is linear: we experience the passing of time minute by minute. We regard what lies behind us as a completed past, and what lies ahead is a future that has not yet been unlocked. We look at the past with a nostalgic look, and full of expectation to the future. This colours our image of architecture in a historical context. We declare a ruin sacred: it is our connection with our ancestors, with times gone by. By contrast, the new is a forerunner of what is yet to come.
