Abstract
Urbanization, biodiversity loss, and climate change demand new approaches to sustainable development. This article presents landscape-based regional design as a “landscape first” strategy that places ecological and cultural systems at the foundation of urbanization. By understanding landscape as a dynamic socio-ecological system, this approach integrates design with nature, people, and history across scales. Through transdisciplinary collaboration, research through design, and the use of regional visions, adaptive strategies, and pilot projects, landscape-based regional design enables climate-adaptive, nature-inclusive, and socially equitable urban development, linking long-term regional ambitions with concrete local action
