Abstract

This research investigates the initial steps of an airport’s transition to sustainable practices through a systemic design case study focused on reusable takeaway bowls. As regulations increasingly require more sustainable packaging solutions, challenging the current throwaway culture, engagement from various stakeholders is essential to this green transition. By following a systemic design approach based on action research and co-creation, a pilot was developed at Oslo Airport. This pilot incorporated reusable takeaway bowls with emerging technologies for payment and smart return solutions. Insights were gathered over a one-month period from two serving units through interviews and surveys. A resulting causal-loop diagram highlighted the complexities of implementing such interventions in an airport environment. Key challenges identified include technological scalability and behavioural obstacles, such as low consumer awareness and insufficient employee motivation. The study underscores the need for a systemic approach, integrating pricing strategies, logistical processes, and user journey improvements.
