Abstract
The Green Deal aims to speed up the transition to a more sustainable economy and society. The paradigm shift and reform towards more mandatory sustainability requirements in public procurement law, which is the topic of this book, has partially been initiated as part of the Circular Economy Action Plan and within the Sustainable Products Initiative (SPI). In the original communication on the New Green Deal, Green Public Procurement (GPP) and a sustainable product policy were both presented as two complementary elements of a strategy to mobilise industry for a clean and circular economy. The transition to a circular economy is one of the key policies on the road to a more sustainable Europe. It wants to contribute to more sustainability by keeping the resource consumption of the EU within planetary boundaries, and therefore striving to reduce its consumption footprint and double its circular material use rate in the coming decade.
