Abstract

This thesis explores the value of vernacular architecture for our built environment and encourages to take a closer look at these local building practices. Two selected case studies from Brazil are used as a lens through which to explore its social, environmental, and cultural significance. While they are from contrasting contexts - one is rooted in long-standing rural tradition, the other has emerged as urban informality - they both hold valuable lessons, shaped by local knowledge and a strong sense of community. The case studies are meant to give insight into the broad range of vernacular architecture and its cultural heritage while offering a holistic perspective on creating a more sustainable and inclusive future for our built environment.
