Abstract

Robin Evans (1944-1993) published only one book during his lifetime, and it was the outcome of 13 years of work. As he remarked in the acknowledgments, he began collecting material for this project in 1969, the same year he completed his studies at the Architectural Association in London. At the time, the main concern of Evans’s research, according to Robin Middleton’s overview of his writings, was the way people lived together, and lived together, in particular, in an anti-authoritarian way’.1 With The Fabrication of Virtue, Evans inverted this theme to offer insight into the role of architecture and the built environment in society.
