Institution National Aerspace Laboratory NLR Date 1982-07-31 Abstract The first part of the paper presents the results of measurements on torque and force irregularities of running reaction wheels. Six different, current technology European wheels, both with ball- and magnet bearings, and with d.c. and a.c. drive motors are examined. Time-domain behaviour around zero wheel speed as well as noise at certain constant wheel speeds is investigated. The second part of the paper discusses the performance aspects of the operation of reaction wheel systems having their own internal feedback control system. The reduction in wheel induced spacecraft attitude noise by employing velocity or wheel attitude feedback is analysed in the continuous time domain. Paper presented at the Joint IFAC/ESA Symposium on Automatic Control in Space, Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands, 5-9 July 1982.
