Lievers, J.W. van der Vet, W.J. Institution National Aerospace Laboratory NLR Date 1971-09-30 Abstract Stress corrosion craxking of 7075 aluminium alloy was investigated by means of bend tests on short transverse pre-cracked specimens. It was found that in 3 % NaCl-solution the S.C.C. behaviour was neither significantlly affectedd by the pH in the range 3-10 nor in almost neutral solution by addition of chromate. In distilled water on the other hand time to failure was about ten times longer. It was necessary to increase the susceptiblity of the alloy to S.C.C. by an extra heat treatment since contrary to expectation in the T6-condition the susceptibility appeared to be too low. Replica and transmission electron microscopy were applied in studies of the fracture surface and the micro structure.
