Institution National Research Council Canada, National Aeronautical Establishment, Structures Section Date 1964-12-31 Abstract A study of the hydrothermal synthesis of chrysotile asbestos ha s been made by investigating reactions in the system MgO - Si02- H20. The effect on the reaction product of varying such parameters as temperature, duration of run, pH and composition of starting materials was examined . This involved identification of the products, using X- ray diffraction techniques and examination in bath optical and electron microscopes, and a determination of their physical and chemical properties . A review of earlier attempts to synthesize chrysotile is also included in this report, and results compared with those of the present investigation. Although a number of interesting observations have been made in the course of the experimental work, up to the present time no significant success in increasing the length of the chrysotile fibres can be claimed .
