Institution National Aerospace Laboratory NLR Date 1984-05-14 Abstract System design studies for medium scale power plants with a closed cycle MHD topping have been performed. These studies show a potential for early commercialization of the direct energy conversion technology for both coal and natural gas fired utility installations. As a first step towards the large scale application of MHD, this technology can demonstrate an economically high enthalpy extraction on an intermediate scale. The closed cycle MHD power train, and in particular the generator, has been studied in detail and a basic design configuration has been defined.
