(TU Delft System Engineering) van Kooten, O. (Wageningen University & Research) Brazier, F.M. (TU Delft System Engineering) Date 2019 Abstract Participation of local actors has shown to be of significant importance to the uptake of new approaches to agricultural initiatives in developing countries. This paper proposes a new approach to empower local chain actors to work together to understand their own and others’ challenges, to pursue common understanding of their situations and challenges, and to then co-create solutions. Reflection on each other’s position is crucial to this process, and is core to the participatory approach designed to this purpose. Agricultural chains are the focus of a case study in Indonesia involving both farmers and wholesalers in the chain. Results show that the approach has led to new forms of collaboration between farmers, and between farmers and wholesalers, increasing market potential.
