Institution National Aerospace Laboratory NLR Date 1992-08-20 Abstract The present contractor report presents some solutions for the optical diagnosis of the interior of a small drop, in which protein crystals are formed by the liquid-vapour method. At first a summary is given of the relevant parameters for the process. Accordingly the appropriate diagnostic methods are reviewed. Finally two methods have been described to overcome the optical distortion and aberrations induced on light beams traversing the strongly curved spherical drop surface. A refractive viewing aid is proposed, especially for imaging of the drop interior. Holographic optical elements are proposed, principally for the introduction of a parallel light beam through the drop, especially for schlieren and interferometric methods.
