Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences Department Weg- en Waterbouwkunde Date 1986-10 Abstract In this study, we investigate the reflectance spectrum of algae in water, in particular the nature of the peak near 700 nm. This reflectance peak is of interest to Remote Sensing of surface waters, because previous work had shown that the peak can be observed from an airplane. Therefore, the measurements were done outdoors, using the sun as the illumination source. In the process, we demonstrated that it is feasible to measure in-situ (even outdoors) with an Optical Multichannel Analyzer (OMA). We have investigated the nature of the peak at 700 nm by varying the algal concentration. Its origin is neither fluorescence nor anomalous scattering, but lies in the spectral dependence of the absorption coefficient of both algae and water. Finally, the shift of the peak was established versus the algal concentration.
