Project Molengraaff Fonds Date 1988 Abstract While the Neogene-Recent development of the Hellenic arc was essentially determined by an extensional tectonic regime, compressional deformation occurred along the southern margin of thea rc. Neogene-Recent compressional deformation was until recently not recognized because it is masked by surficial extensional structures, while most of the evident compressional structures in pre-Neogene rocks are related to Late-Paleogene orogenic events. In this report the results of a geological fieldwork are presented, and it is concluded that the structural evolution of this part of the Hellenic arc was determined mainly by compressional deformation A divergent structural evolution of SW Crete and Gavdos since Tortonian times is explained by activity of large sinistral wrench-zones transsecting the southern margin of the arc.
