Besides the GPS position sensor requirements, data latency, data update rate, and display update rate, could cause the display presentation system not to meet all the requirements. As a result, additional techniques have to be applied to artificially increase the position update rate that is required to obtain smoothly animated perspective flightpath displays. For future aircraft, new avionics requirements can be taken into account. However, to increase the potential for retrofit, a solution should be developed for the current operational aircraft (both commercial and general aviation) within the present constraints. This thesis provides examples, in which it is the limited update rate that must be compensated for. A requirements analysis is performed for the GPS position data driving a perspective flightpath display. It will be shown that a combination of extrapolation and smoothing techniques, performed by a so-called datashaper, may yield a potential solution. To evaluate this datashaper, part-task simulator experiments have been conducted with trained pilots as well as with trained non-pilots. The initial results indicate that the datashaper may successfully be used and does satisfy the perceptual requirements that must be met when using perspective flightpath displays.
