The influence of previous corrosion on fatigue crack initiation has been determined. Cylindrical specimens and flat specimens with a central hole of the aluminium alloy T075-T6 were corroded in a 3.5 % NaC1 solution. The cylindrical specimens were tested under constant amplitude loading while for the specimens with a central hole a block...

Residual strength tests have been performed on 610 mm wide centre cracked panels. During the tests, stable crack growth was filmed and crack opening displacements were measured. Fracture toughness was determined using the method of Feddersen. Flight simulation fatigue tests were carried out to investigate the crack propagation properties. A...

Some residual strength tests have been performed on 610 mm wide centre-cracked panels at a temperature of -50 C, in order to examine whether equal Ke values are obtained as for 300 mm wide panels, tested at -50°C. This work is a continuation of the residual strength investigation reported in NLR TR 76103 and NLR TR 75168.

A microscopic study has been performed on carbon composite fracture surfaces, using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). It appears that the SEM is a useful tool to examine the fracture surface characteristics of composite materials failing under different loading conditions.

Residual strength tests have heen performed, on 300 mm wide centrecracked panels of various thicknesses, at room temperature and at -50 C. During the tests, stable crack growth was filmed and recorded with the electric potential method. Fracture toughness was determined using the method of Feddersen.

Fatigue tests on unidirectional Ca/ep composite material have been performed to investigate whether previous fatigue loading did influence the residual static strength. Residual strength tests were carried out on (0, ± 45)2s and (± 45)2s laminates, while for the (O, ± 45)2s laminate the influence of previous tensile fatigue loading on the...

Residual strength tests have been carried out on various Kevlar 49-Carbon epoxy laminate configurations consisting of a carbon/epoxy core with face sheets of Kevlar 49 fabric. The influence of fatigue loading of notched specimens on the residual strength was investigated.

An experimental investigation.was performed on 80 mm thick plate material of 7OIO-T7651 and 7OIO-T73651 developed by Alcan Industries Ltd in U.K. The testing programme involved: tensile tests, fracture toughness, stress corrosion and fatigue tests. For comparison a similar investigation vas carried out on 7075-T7351 Alcoa plate material.

Residual strength tests have been performed on carbon/epoxy laminates with face sheets of aramid fabric. The specimens used were 40 mm wide and provided with central circular holes. Constant amplitude fatigue tests at a stress ratio of R = 0.1 have been carried out on notched and unnotched materials.

The fatigue crack propagation resistances of 7010-T7651, 7010-T73651 and 7075-T7351 thick plate were compared for flight simulation (gust spectrum) loading conditions. 7075-T7351 was slightly superior, and it was shown that this superiority was not essentially due to the higher fracture toughness of this alloy. The influence of specimen...

Constant amplitude and flight simulation fatigue tests have been carried out on sulphuric acid, chromic acid and phosphoric acid anodized specimens. A comparison was made with the fatigue behaviour of bare sheet material. Before fatigue testing the fracture strain of the anodic layers was determined.

The Jominy end-quench test was applied to extruded rods of the aluminium alloys 2024 and 7075 to obtain a decreasing quench rate over the length of the rods. Subsequently the alloys were heat treated to the conditions: 2024-T4, 2024-T6, 7075-T73. A corrosion investigation and a transmission electron microscopy investigation were performed to...

The Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy 7050 produced by Alcoa is a typical plate and forging alloy because of its low quench sensitivity. In order to compare this alloy with the earlier tested plate alloy 7010 an experimental programme was performed involving tensile, fracture toughness, and fatigue testing. In addition stress corrosion crack initiation and...

A comparison of some engineering properties of T050-T73é51, TOIO-TT65I and TOIO-TT365I plate has been made. The properties investigated were strength, stress corrosion resistance, fracture toughness and fatigue crack propagation resistance under flight simulation loading. It was found that both 7050 and 7010 are high strength deep hardenable...
