The performance of a concatenated coding scheme consisting of a rate 2 convolutional inner code and a Reed-Solomon outer code is investigated. It is shown that the (256,224) Reed-Solomon code over GF(257) satisfies the operational requirements of the European Space Agency and achieves an additional coding gain of at least 2 dB.
