Biofuels such as ethanol from sugar cane and cellulose ‘waste’ are theoretically sustainable, as their combustion releases no more CO2 than is absorbed during production. Even so, they are also controversial, because they are believed to be grown at the expense of food crops, or because areas of rainforest are believed to the cleared for them....

He was appointed as a Professor of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences for his life’s work and received a major European research grant to develop artificial cell division. Dekker (56) is now focusing on the development of artificial life.
