The research and innovation AGILE project has developed an approach, the so-called AGILE Paradigm, focusing on the acceleration of the deployment and operation of collaborative Multidisciplinary Design Analysis Optimization systems, which in turns can be exploited to accelerate the development of complex products, such as novel aerospace systems. Although the technologies developed for the implementation of the paradigm, have proved to reduce the deployment and operational time to more than 40% with respect to conventional MDAO approaches, the AGILE Paradigm has not been formalized and model by digital design engineering practices. This work introduces a novel approach leveraging MBSE principles to streamline the development of agile MDAO design systems, and establishing a bridge between MBSE and MDAO. Major outcomes here presented are the MBSE-driven models of the so-called AGILE MDAO system, representing the architecture, the requirements, as well as the organizational aspects, and all the interactions and activities implemented during the life-cycle stages of the MDAO system. The MBSE Architectural Framework, which defines the underlying ontological concepts and perspectives driving the development of the AGILE MDAO system model, are modeled and presented as well. The paper introduces for the first time the overall approach, as well as the high-level elements of the models developed, here represented by making use of SysML standard. The described approach is at the core of the recently launched project AGILE4.0, in which its scope will be expanded to cover the entire life-cycle of the development of complex aeronautical systems.
The paper describes the deployment of the AGILE Development Framework to investigate the Strut Braced Wing aircraft configuration. The design process consists of a multilevel multidisciplinary architecture, progressing from the initial conceptual synthesis to the physics based analysis. All the main disciplinary domains, including on board system design and cost assessment, are accounted for in the assembled workflow. Due to the specific characteristics of the Strut Braced Wing configuration, the aeroelastic analysis is the main focus of the study and it is addressed at both high and low fidelity levels. The integration of the engine-wing system is also included in the design process. All the design competences, which are hosted at the different partners, communicate via CPACS (Common Parametric Aircraft Configuration Schema) data schema. All the results generated, including the multidisciplinary design process itself, will be published and made available as part of the AGILE Overall Aircraft Design database.
AGILE Project is a 3 rd generation Aircraft Design Optimization project involving heterogeneous teams of expert across Industry, Academy and Research organization. The establishment of effective collaborative design methodologies is currently acknowledged as the key enabler for future product development processes. At the same time, the need to introduce collaborative design techniques within educational activities is also well recognized by the Academic, Research and Industrial communities. AGILE project supported by European Commission's H2020 Programme, is setting the “AGILE Paradigm”, a conceptual framework which contains all the elements to implement a multidisciplinary collaborative design network and several open source elements to implement and use in academic collaborations. The AGILE Academy initiative is conceived to infuse into the Academic organizations and educational environments the “AGILE Paradigm”, and make available all the technologies developed within the AGILE Project, which support the implementation of such a Paradigm. This paper focus is on the inception, approach and results of the AGILE Academy participants from several universities around the world.
