In this extended abstract, we show the supervised learning approach to predicting passenger load of trams, based on historical passenger load patterns. We look at two different cases: predicting long-term passenger load of any given day and time, and predicting short-term passenger load at a particular public transport vehicle.@en

We perform analysis of public transport data from March 2015 from The Hague, the Netherlands, combined from three sources: static network information, automatic vehicles location (AVL) and automated fare collection (AFC) data. We highlight the effect of bunching swings, and show that this phenomenon can be extracted using unsupervised machine learning techniques, namely clustering. We show different cases of bunching swings, some of which can persist for a considerable time. We also show the correlation of bunching rate with passenger load, and bunching probability patterns for working days and weekends. We show, how formations of bunching swings can be extracted, and clustered into four different types, which we name "high passenger load", "whole route", "evening late route", "long duration". We analyse each bunching swings formation type in detail.@en

The aim of this paper is to extend past research on travel behavior analysis by investigating travelers’ emotions and perceptions of the system’s performance. Perceived travel happiness as an extension of travel satisfaction is researched in the framework of the decision-making process during traveling. Socio-demographic, cognitive, and affective data were collected from a questionnaire survey that took place in Athens (Greece), the Netherlands, and Barcelona and Salamanca (Spain). A Bayesian network was developed to investigate the interrelations between travel happiness and parameters that affect travel behavior. Findings revealed that travel mode choice directly affects the level of happiness that a person experiences during everyday trips. Moreover, travel happiness is directly associated with the traveler’s perception of the occurrence of disruptions during everyday trips and the level of tolerance he/she has toward such disruptions. Results also indicated that further research should focus on understanding how the topology and performance of each country’s system affect travel-related choices. Finally, a discussion of the most significant results is provided.@en
