Conventional asphalt mixture has poor microwave absorbing performance and microwave heating efficiency. Based on the characteristics of dielectric loss of scrap tire pyrolysis carbon black (PCB), it is proposed to improve the microwave absorbing performance and self-healing rate of bitumen. The phase composition and electromagnetic parameters of PCB were tested to reveal its microwave heating mechanism. The preparation parameters, heating characteristics and self-healing properties of PCB modified bitumen were studied through the dispersion uniformity test, microwave heating test and SCB test. The main phases of PCB are microwave absorbing carbon and silicon, indicating that PCB is a good electric loss microwave absorbing material. 40 min is the recommended mixing time of 15% PCB modified bitumen. PCB's dosage, microwave frequency and microwave heating time have significant effects on the microwave heating characteristics of PCB modified bitumen. PCB can improve high-temperature stability, thermal conductance, heat storage capacity and self-healing rate of bitumen.@en

A self-compacting steel slag epoxy resin concrete (SERC) was designed with steel slag as aggregate and epoxy resin as binder for rapid repair of road expansion joints and pavement. At the same time, a group of self-compacting basalt epoxy resin concrete (BERC) with basalt as coarse aggregate and limestone as fine aggregate was set up as the control group. The element analysis and micro morphology of SERC and BERC were studied by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) to reveal the strength-forming mechanism of the two epoxy resin concretes. The cube compression test and Marshall stability test were used to study the effect of the strength formation rate and temperature of SERC and BERC on the strength. In addition, the high-temperature stability, low-temperature crack resistance, water damage resistance, fatigue resistance and interlayer bonding properties of SERC and BERC were also studied. The results showed that both SERC and BERC have good mechanical properties, high temperature properties and good bonding properties, and the low-temperature crack resistance and fatigue properties of SERC are better than that of BERC. According to the verification of the actual project that has been in service for one year, SERC can be perfectly used for road expansion joints.@en

The reuse in high-value materials is one of the important resource utilization approaches of phosphorus tailings. At present, a mature technical system has been formed on the reuse of phosphorus slag in building materials, and silicon fertilizers in the extraction of yellow phosphorus. But there is a lack of research on the high-value reuse of phosphorus tailings. In order to make safe and effective utilization of phosphorus tailing resources, this research concentrated on how to solve easy agglomeration and difficult dispersion of phosphorus tailing micro-powder, when it was recycled in road asphalt. In the experimental procedure, phosphorus tailing micro-powder is treated in two methods. One method is to directly add it with different contents in asphalt to form a mortar. Dynamic shear tests were used to explore the effect of phosphorus tailing micro-powder on the high-temperature rheological properties of asphalt influence mechanism of material service behavior. The other method is to replace the mineral powder in asphalt mixture. The effect of phosphate tailing micro-powder on the water damage resistance in open-graded friction course (OGFC) asphalt mixtures was illustrated, based on the Marshall stability test and the freeze–thaw split test. The research results show that the performance indicators of the modified phosphorus tailing micro-powder meet the requirements for mineral powder in road engineering. Compared with standard OGFC asphalt mixtures, the residual stability of immersion and freeze–thaw splitting strength were improved when replace the mineral powder. The residual stability of immersion increased from 84.70% to 88.31%, and freeze–thaw splitting strength increased from 79.07% to 82.61%. The results indicate that phosphate tailing micro-powder has a certain positive effect on the water damage resistance. These performance improvements can be attributed to the larger specific surface area for phosphate tailing micro-powder than ordinary mineral powder, which can effectively adsorb asphalt and form structural asphalt. The research results are expected to support the large-scale reuse of phosphorus tailing powder in road engineering.@en

In industrial large-scale bioreactors, microorganisms encounter heterogeneous substrate concentration conditions, which can impact growth or product formation. Here we carried out an extended (12 h) experiment of repeated glucose pulsing with a 10-min period to simulate fluctuating glucose concentrations with Aspergillus niger producing glucoamylase, and investigated its dynamic response by rapid sampling and quantitative metabolomics. The 10-min period represents worst-case conditions, as in industrial bioreactors the average cycling duration is usually in the order of 1 min. We found that cell growth and the glucoamylase productivity were not significantly affected, despite striking metabolomic dynamics. Periodical dynamic responses were found across all central carbon metabolism pathways, with different time scales, and the frequently reported ATP paradox was confirmed for this A. niger strain under the dynamic conditions. A thermodynamics analysis revealed that several reactions of the central carbon metabolism remained in equilibrium even under periodical dynamic conditions. The dynamic response profiles of the intracellular metabolites did not change during the pulse exposure, showing no significant adaptation of the strain to the more than 60 perturbation cycles applied. The apparent high tolerance of the glucoamylase producing A. niger strain for extreme variations in the glucose availability presents valuable information for the design of robust industrial microbial hosts.@en

A detailed planetary boundary layer (PBL) flow over complex terrain can be simulated by nesting mesoscale numerical weather prediction (NWP) models and microscale computational fluid dynamics (CFD). When fully prescribed lateral boundaries are encountered, the over-specified treatment of CFD or limited-area models may result in ill-posedness and numerical instabilities. Such behaviors are due to inconsistent governing equations, turbulent viscosity models, and underlying surfaces between meso- and micro-scale formulations. In this study, by applying the relaxation treatment in marginal zones of CFD, its wind components are forced toward the externally specified NWP values. The relaxation schemes, deduced from simple advective transport equations, are optimized using genetic algorithms. Their numerical abilities in absorbing wave reflections on shallow-water systems are more efficient than the published approach. Then, key questions concerning the selection of relaxation strength, turbulence model constants, and prognostic variables specified on NWP–CFD nested boundaries are systemically investigated in the neutrally stratified Askervein Hill case. The relaxation scheme from simpler systems also performs effectively in CFD and decreases the adaption distance of wind velocities near over-specified outlet boundaries. A full set approach to obtain well-posed PBL solutions from the microscale domains sustained with inflow boundaries from NWP is proposed and validated.@en

An in-depth exploration of the reaction kinetics and thermo-chemical behaviors of the raceway can offer practical insights for optimizing the operations of blast furnace (BF), thus achieving a more effective iron and steel production process. In this study, the dynamic characteristics and the flow, heat and mass transfer behaviors in the BF raceway were simulated by Discrete Element Method-Computational Fluid Dynamics (DEM-CFD) method at a particulate scale. The effects of coke size distribution and blast velocity on coke combustion characteristics, thermochemical behavior (particle volume fraction, raceway size, carbon loss, and coke temperature) and microscopic properties (coordination number (CN), contact normal force, pore structure and stress) were systematically investigated. The results show that as the blast velocity decreases or the size ratio λ (the largest coke particle size divided by the smallest coke particle size) increases, the raceway size becomes smaller, resulting in a smaller area of high oxygen (O2) concentration and low carbon monoxide (CO) concentration in the raceway, and higher CO concentration in the packed bed. For the thermal-chemical behaviors, a lower blast velocity or a higher λ value decreases the number of particles experiencing mass loss, as well as increases individual particle mass loss, the average coke temperature and its variance. For microscopic properties, the CN distribution becomes wider as λ increases. The contact normal force in the coke bed with λ > 1 is significantly higher than that of λ = 1. As λ increases or blast velocity decreases, the pore distribution curve shifts to the left and the average pore volume decreases. The stress acting on the particles in the raceway increases with the blast velocity or λ. These new understandings of the complex reactive flow behaviors in the raceway will shed light on energy utilization and process optimization.@en

Ordered layered structures serve as essential components in lithium (Li)-ion cathodes1–3. However, on charging, the inherently delicate Li-deficient frameworks become vulnerable to lattice strain and structural and/or chemo-mechanical degradation, resulting in rapid capacity deterioration and thus short battery life2,4. Here we report an approach that addresses these issues using the integration of chemical short-range disorder (CSRD) into oxide cathodes, which involves the localized distribution of elements in a crystalline lattice over spatial dimensions, spanning a few nearest-neighbour spacings. This is guided by fundamental principles of structural chemistry and achieved through an improved ceramic synthesis process. To demonstrate its viability, we showcase how the introduction of CSRD substantially affects the crystal structure of layered Li cobalt oxide cathodes. This is manifested in the transition metal environment and its interactions with oxygen, effectively preventing detrimental sliding of crystal slabs and structural deterioration during Li removal. Meanwhile, it affects the electronic structure, leading to improved electronic conductivity. These attributes are highly beneficial for Li-ion storage capabilities, markedly improving cycle life and rate capability. Moreover, we find that CSRD can be introduced in additional layered oxide materials through improved chemical co-doping, further illustrating its potential to enhance structural and electrochemical stability. These findings open up new avenues for the design of oxide cathodes, offering insights into the effects of CSRD on the crystal and electronic structure of advanced functional materials.@en
