Master thesis (2026) - M.I. Piperigou Grammatika, Vincent Meijer
Contrails contribute significantly to aviation's climate impact, yet large uncertainties in their detectability remain. Many observational studies rely on geostationary satellite imagery, but the ability of these instruments to resolve contrails, particularly in their early lifetime, has not been characterized. No study has yet tracked individual contrails continuously from their first observation in ground-based imagery into their appearance in geostationary satellite imagery. We present a dataset of 148 individually tracked contrails combining ground-based all-sky cameras, GOES-East ABI and MTG-I1 FCI satellite imagery, ADS-B flight data, and ERA5 reanalysis at two sites: ARM Southern Great Plains in Oklahoma and KNMI Cabauw in the Netherlands. Contrails are tracked from early lifetime, attributed to individual flights, and followed until detection in satellite imagery. We find that contrails become detectable at a mean age of 20 minutes and mean width of 1.8 km, that clear sky conditions enable detection at narrower widths, and that background cirrus strongly limits detectability. ...
