In international corporations, informal moments such as coffee breaks and lunchtime play an important role in shaping workplace relationships, yet they receive less structured attention than formal meetings,
especially in cross-cultural workplace settings. Newcomers navigating these informal moments often experience uncertainties with little existing support to guide them. This project addressed this gap through a Contextmapping study, combining interviews, a digital diary study, and a co-creation workshop with newcomers and senior employees in international corporations in the Netherlands. The research resulted in the Participation = Investment + Boundaries model, the Newcomer Journey Map, and three personas describing different ways newcomers approach participation. These insights informed two designs: Your Boterham, a set of zines supporting personal reflection, and Interaction MENU, a set of printed napkins creating low-pressure openings for interaction during lunch. Evaluations with newcomers and senior employees suggest both designs support more inclusive and comfortable informal interaction, offering companies a concrete, low-effort starting point for supporting newcomers across cultures. ...
