The amount of suspended fines in the southern North Sea strongly depends on their exchange with the sandy seabed. This exchange is governed by resuspension of fines during storms, followed by burial in the week thereafter. Despite its importance for fine sediment dynamics, the burial of fines into a sandy seabed is currently not well understood. This paper presents a mechanistic conceptual model, explaining how the interaction of migrating small ripples and larger megaripples can bury fine sediment in a sandy seabed shortly after storms. The burial process consists of four phases forming a dynamic cycle. A storm stirs up the bed, remobilising fines, while forming megaripples. After the storm, fines can settle again depositing atop the sandy seabed. Interaction between bedforms of different scales is then crucial to bury fines 1–2 dm within the seabed. Megaripples formed during storms gradually adjust to calmer conditions in the waning of storms. During this adjustment period, fines are buried by current-induced ripples in the troughs of the former megaripples. Field measurements collected in 2017 corroborate this conceptual model, showing fines in distinct patches, both horizontally and vertically. Furthermore, fines are found up to 10–15 cm in the seabed shortly after storms. The data further reveal how fine sediment occurrences on and within the seabed vary strongly over multiple length scales. They both vary on the mega-scale (kilometres) and on the micro-scale (metres-centimetres). As the micro-scale is multiple orders of magnitude smaller than the scale on which hydro-morphological models operate, parameterisations are required to aggregate the effect of burial in numerical models.@en

The sandy seabed of shallow coastal shelf seas displays morphological patterns of various dimensions. The seabed also harbors a rich ecosystem. Increasing pressure from human-induced disturbances necessitates further study on drivers of benthic community distributions over morphological patterns. Moreover, a greater understanding of the sand ripple distribution over tidal sand waves may improve morphological model predictions. Here we analyzed the biotic abundance and ripple morphology in sand wave troughs and crests using video transects. We found that both the epibenthos and endobenthos are significantly more abundant in sand wave troughs, where ripples are less abundant and more irregularly shaped. Finally, we show that camera systems are relatively quick and effective tools to study biotic spatial patterns in relation to seabed morphology.@en

Accurate characterization of mechanical perturbations on the seabed is essential for developing models assessing the environmental impacts from physical disturbances. Furthermore, understanding the relationship between (1) seabed resistance and (2) penetration depth, can also facilitate the development of more efficient and less impactful fishing gears. This study examines these two aspects of tickler chain rigged beam trawling via large-scale physical experiments. Three scaled down models (“light,” “medium,” and “heavy” designs) were developed to represent the impacts from typical beam trawl configurations used in the North Sea and were towed at various speeds on a saturated sand bed. Results reveal that increasing the towing speed reduces the mean penetration depth and the steady-state towing resistance of the gears. Smaller scale physical model tests incorporating tickler chains in sand, demonstrate that the towing resistance is significantly influenced by the soil compaction and particle sizes. Moreover, our study offers a simple and efficient method to estimate the penetration depth and towing resistance of prototype beam trawl gears in sand. This approach, along with the associated research, may be valuable for marine scientists assessing trawling impacts and demersal fishing gear designers seeking to optimize efficiency while minimizing seabed disturbance.@en
