Engineered, highly controllable quantum systems are promising simulators of emergent physics beyond the simulation capabilities of classical computers¹. An important problem in many-body physics is itinerant magnetism, which originates purely from long-range interactions of free electrons and whose existence in real systems has been debated for decades^2,3. Here we use a quantum simulator consisting of a four-electron-site square plaquette of quantum dots⁴ to demonstrate Nagaoka ferromagnetism⁵. This form of itinerant magnetism has been rigorously studied theoretically^6–9 but has remained unattainable in experiments. We load the plaquette with three electrons and demonstrate the predicted emergence of spontaneous ferromagnetic correlations through pairwise measurements of spin. We find that the ferromagnetic ground state is remarkably robust to engineered disorder in the on-site potentials and we can induce a transition to the low-spin state by changing the plaquette topology to an open chain. This demonstration of Nagaoka ferromagnetism highlights that quantum simulators can be used to study physical phenomena that have not yet been observed in any experimental system. The work also constitutes an important step towards large-scale quantum dot simulators of correlated electron systems.

Recent progress of quantum simulators provides insight into the fundamental problems of strongly correlated systems. To adequately assess the accuracy of these simulators, the precise modeling of the many-body physics, with accurate model parameters, is crucially important. In this paper, we employed an ab initio exact diagonalization framework to compute the correlated physics of a few electrons in artificial potentials. We apply this approach to a quantum-dot system and study the magnetism of the correlated electrons, obtaining good agreement with recent experimental measurements in a plaquette. Through control of dot potentials and separation, including geometric manipulation of tunneling, we examine the Nagaoka transition and determine the robustness of the ferromagnetic state. While the Nagaoka theorem considers only a single-band Hubbard model, in this work we perform extensive ab initio calculations that include realistic multiorbital conditions in which the level splitting is smaller than the interactions. This simulation complements the experiments and provides insight into the formation of ferromagnetism in correlated systems. More generally, our calculation sets the stage for further theoretical analysis of analog quantum simulators at a quantitative level.@en
