Expanding Brutalism
Transforming by Expanding Post-65 Architecture
This design research explores a transformation strategy for post-65 architecture that is threatened by demolition because of changing urban context. Focusing on the Kanaalcentrum in Utrecht, a generic but distinct Brutalist office complex, the research proposes an alternative to the future demolition of this building. Through research and design experimentation, a design is developed that solves the required densification using the architectural language of the original building. The resulting design demonstrates how this disappearing architectural style can be preserved while adapting to changing requirements. The strategy that is used is formulated to be applicable to buildings facing similar pressure.
