In the Netherlands, the residential building sector accounts for 20% of energy consumption and 14% of carbon emissions. To reach the ambitious National targets of decreasing energy consumption and to stop this sector’s reliance on natural gas, a wide renovation of the building stock is needed. Residential buildings’ energy performance has to improve, approximately 7 million dwellings need costly renovations. To meet the National targets the number of yearly renovations should steeply increase from how it is currently.
This research makes use of the theories of business model and business model innovation to tackle this issue, evaluating how companies offering energy efficiency renovations should adjust their business model in order to improve their effectiveness, therefore unlocking energy efficiency renovations for Dutch residential buildings. This study is one of the first to investigate this topic relative to the Dutch market. The thesis report contributes to the studies and research about business model and business models innovations to stimulate energy efficiency in residential buildings.
