Attracted by the growing career opportunities emerging in the Dutch East Indies around the turn of the twentieth century, an increasing number of young, ambitious and well-trained professionals from the Netherlands set sail to the Dutch colony. Amongst them was a growing community of architects. Inspired by a new sense of social responsibility, and in tune with the aesthetic and perspectives of the new cultural and social movements then sweeping Europe, they came inspired to introduce the latest modern ideas and approaches to the practice of architecture and urban reform. Thomas Karsten was one of this band of pioneers. A strong personality, with an incessant energy and firm ideas about the future directions his profession should take, Karsten soon became one of the leading voices in the development of modern town planning in the Dutch East Indies.

Bouwen in turbulente tijden
Het werk van Ingenieurs-Bureau Ingenegeren-Vrijburg (IBIV) (1936-1957)
Op 1 mei 1936 openden de Nederlandse ingenieurs A.C. Ingenegeren en G.S. Vrijburg in Nederlands-Indië de deuren van Ingenieurs-Bureau Ingenegeren-Vrijburg (IBIV) (afb.2 ). Het in Bandoeng gevestigde IBIV zou bestaan tot 1957. De bestaansperiode van het bureau viel samen met politiek turbulente jaren: de nadagen van het koloniale Nederlandse bestuur over Nederlands-Indië, de Japanse bezetting en de eerste jaren van de Republiek Indonesië. Aan de hand van beschrijvingen van zes representatieve en karakteristieke IBIV-ontwerpen uit de opeenvolgende fasen van zijn bestaan wordt een beeld geschetst van het type opdrachtgevers en de stilistische ontwikkeling van IBIV.
Dit onderzoek naar het werk van IBIV biedt de mogelijkheid om vast te stellen of en hoe de ingrijpende politieke en daarmee gepaard gaande sociale en economische veranderingen van invloed waren op de beroepspraktijk en vakinhoudelijke ontwikkeling van de IBIV-architecten. Het past binnen de geleidelijk opkomende benadering waarbij laat- en (vroeg)postkoloniale ontwikkelingen in architectuur en stedenbouw niet langer afzonderlijk maar in relatie tot elkaar worden onderzocht.
