Vivianite (Fe₃(PO₄)₂·8 H₂O) has emerged as a promising mineral for phosphorus (P) recovery from digested sludge, and it may also contribute to phosphate management in lake sediments and manure, given the similar anaerobic conditions across these environments. However, organic ligands in these matrices have been proposed to complex with iron (Fe), thereby reducing the efficiency of vivianite formation. This study aims to elucidate the impact of organic ligands on vivianite formation, particularly focusing on their binding strength with iron and the subsequent effects on vivianite formation in pig manure. Organic ligands not only form complexes with iron but also influence the crystal growth process. We investigated how different organic ligands affect the formation and dissolution of vivianite, assuming that ligands with higher iron-binding strength would enhance phosphate solubilization. Our findings revealed that citrate nearly completely inhibited vivianite formation (up to 100 %) and caused a 50 % dissolution of existing vivianite, while humate hindered vivianite formation by 40 % but only led to a 10 % dissolution. Interestingly, pig-derived dissolved organic matter had minimal effects on the precipitation of iron and phosphorus but significantly altered the morphology of the resulting products, which varied depending on the age of the manure filtrate. While the iron binding strength of organic ligands does influence vivianite formation, it does not solely account for the reduced vivianite formation observed in complex matrices like manure. Therefore, a more nuanced assessment of the role of organic matter in vivianite formation is warranted.

Vivianite presents a significant phosphorus pool in iron-rich, reducing environments, necessitating the development of an affordable and routine quantification method. A novel extraction protocol using 2,2′-bipyridine (Bipy) was proposed as a promising approach. However, the efficacy of this protocol in achieving complete vivianite extraction remains uncertain and lacks robust analytical validation.

This study systematically assessed the Bipy extraction protocol on known amount of synthetic and two magnetically recovered environmental vivianite samples, with varying oxidation levels, impurity content, and particle size. Extraction efficiencies of iron and phosphorus were 13–44 % and 13–55 %, respectively, indicating incomplete extraction under the original protocol conditions (0.2 % Bipy, 24 h). An initially rapid release of iron and phosphorus slowed down across all samples, indicating non-constant reaction rates, and suggesting that the extraction is governed by mechanisms beyond kinetic control. Extending the extraction time to 48 h and increasing the Bipy concentration to 1 % yielded marginal improvements, with efficiency gains of 14 % or less. Grinding, which reduced particle size, nearly doubled extraction efficiency. Conversely, the sample with the highest Fe2+ content showed the overall lowest overall extraction efficiencies. Similarly, recovered vivianite samples containing impurities, namely magnesium and calcium, were extracted less efficiently than synthetic vivianite. Additionally, the extracted iron-to‑phosphorus ratio exceeded the theoretical value of 0.67, indicating non-stoichiometric extraction.

To establish Bipy extraction as a reliable analytical method, it is crucial to address incomplete extraction and determine whether vivianite can be fully extracted or only to a certain extent. A potential strategy involves reducing extraction time and repeating the extraction step.

The global phosphorus challenge arises from the uneven distribution of phosphorus resources, environmental effects from phosphorus losses and unsustainable linear management. Despite progress in advanced phosphorus recycling, less than 1% of secondary phosphorus resources produced globally are recycled. In this Review, we comprehensively explore global barriers to phosphorus recycling. Manure (15–20 million tons P (MtP) yr−1), mining and fertilizer industry waste (6–12 MtP yr−1), wastewater (~3.7 MtP yr−1) and food waste (~1.2 MtP yr−1) are the major secondary phosphorus resources worldwide. In addition, accumulated legacy phosphorus in soil and sediment comprises a combined stock of more than 3,200 MtP. Phosphorus mismanagement and losses cost stakeholders US$265 billion annually, yet substantial barriers to phosphorus recycling remain. Key challenges to be overcome include low competitiveness of recycled phosphorus products, complex waste handling, limited legacy phosphorus recovery and fragmented collaboration among stakeholders. A shift is needed towards an integrated, systems-based approach that simultaneously addresses technical, economic and societal challenges. Transdisciplinary strategies and research will advance phosphorus recycling and the development of a sustainable, circular phosphorus economy. Incorporating the perspectives of diverse stakeholders will help drive increasingly sustainable phosphorus management.
