Palliative care is an interdisciplinary approach, aiming to improve patient’s social, physical and psychological comfort. Its paediatric branch (CPC) is an ever developing discipline in the Netherlands. With more children predicted to develop chronic conditions and diseases in the upcoming decades, Dutch CPC is expanding its structure. Because the CPC targets a large age group, some patients needs’ are not adequately met. Research shows that adolescents are a group continuously under served under CPC, due to their unique developmental and psychosocial needs.
This research explores what design interventions improve social interactions and wellbeing in adolescents palliative facilities. Using literature review, case studies, participatory workshops and observation, this paper will identify design guidelines for the site, private spaces and communal areas of the facility.
