The hydrolysis of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in waste-activated sludge (WAS) is considered as the rate-limiting step in anaerobic digestion. Uronic acids such as alginate are one of main polysaccharide components in EPS; however, their roles on WAS conversion are overlooked until now. Previously, we described alginate-degrading consortia (ADC) that have high activity for alginate conversion. In this work, ADC was studied for polysaccharide hydrolysis and methane production from WAS for the first time, which increased the methane production by 115%-185%. Dosing ADC also increased the values of biological methane potential from 131 to 172 mL/gVSS. An alginate-like exopolysaccharide was extracted from WAS, and the content was 65 mg/g-VSS. Then, the molecular weight profiles at UV254nm showed that disaccharides were the final hydrolysates of alginate by ADC enzyme. Extracted EPS could be utilized by ADC for methane production with acetate as the main intermediate. The mechanism was proposed that ADC played a key role in WAS conversion. These results indicated that alginate in EPS shall not be overlooked, which offers a new microbial method to enhance methane recovery from WAS. The microbial changes in ADC for the stability of WAS digestion should be investigated in the future.@en

When sapphire crystal is prepared with Kyropoulos method, the necking-down growth process is a key stage. Sapphire growth defect is a big problem in this stage. However, diagnosing growth defects is subject to the interference of workers subjectivity and accuracy always goes down. To address the problem, a novel defect diagnosis method is proposed for necking-down growth process in this paper. Industrial CCD sensors replace eyes of skilled workers to observe in this method. A new Defect-Diagnosing Siamese network (DDSN) is used in this method. We use Siamese architecture to learn similarity through pairs of images. We use the deep separable convolution (DSC) into the DDSN to optimize running speed and model size. In experiment, dataset is acquired by industrial CCD sensors in the necking-down growth process. The accuracy of defect diagnosis can reach up to 94.5%. The method significantly improves the traditional way.@en

Sludge, of which alginate-like biomaterial is a major organic component, is an increasing environmental problem. Thus, efficient anaerobic degradation of alginate provides a new method for sludge utilization. In this study, anaerobic alginate hydrolytic bacteria (AHB) were proposed to enrich with methanogens synergetically to reduce the inhibition of intermediate metabolites. The COD of produced methane reached 80.7 ± 1.9% (n = 4) of initial alginate COD. After considering the microbial growth (8%–18% of COD), a good COD balance indicated that alginate was fully consumed and the main final metabolites were methane and CO2. Methanogenesis could promote alginate conversion by AHB. The enriched bacteria for alginate degradation in this study were different from that of former known AHB. The metabolic pathway of alginate degradation was revealed by metagenomics, in which oligo-alginate lyase was detected in twelve bacteria, and typical carbon metabolic pathways to convert alginate to methane were identified. More studies of bacterial isolation and biofuel production are still needed in the future.@en

In order to recognize the dripping and the carburizing behaviors of the molten iron within the coke packed bed in the flash ironmaking process, a transient three-dimensional numerical model was developed. The volume of fluid (VOF) approach is used to describe the movement of the molten iron and the argon gas. The porous medium module is employed to define the momentum, heat, and mass transfer between the coke packed bed and the molten iron. Moreover, a factor is introduced to consider the influence of the ash film on the carburization process. A reasonable agreement between the experiment and simulation is obtained. The results indicate that the molten iron flows downward from the upper crucible to middle crucible. After entering the middle crucible, the molten iron spreads around within the coke packed bed and simultaneously moves downward. The carbon is, therefore, transferred from the coke to the molten iron. With the 47-mm-height coke packed bed, the carbon content in the molten iron after the carburization decreases from 3.19 to 1.97 pct, while the coke diameter ranges from 2 to 5 mm. With the 2-mm-diameter coke, the carbon content in the molten iron after the carburization increases from 2.84 to 4.81 pct, while the coke packed bed height increases from 37 to 97 mm.@en
