n this present volume we have gathered eleven chapters in three main groups arranged by foundation type. The majority of offshore wind turbines constructed to date are supported by monopile foundations and this is reflected herein with six chapters addressing aspects related to their performance. The challenge facing designers is to determine the ultimate lateral resistance of these relatively rigid foundations; assess their response to cyclic loading and predict the dynamic response of the system across the life-cycle. As water depths and turbine sizes increase a move towards jacket structures may be required. These are usually supported either by axial loaded piles or suction caissons. For axially loaded piles methods to determine the effect of ageing in sand and to quantify cyclic loading events dominate current research in this field. Whilst pile foundations are a relatively maturetechnology the impact of the installation of suction caissonfoundations, particularly on the dynamic response of a windturbine, is considered in the work presented herein.

ICE Themes is a collection of print and digital books showcasing cutting-edge research and practical applications of recent research on key topics in civil engineering. Themes in the series include climate change resilience, advances in construction management, developments in renewable energy, and innovations in construction materials. Geothermal Energy, Heat Exchange Systems and Energy Piles focuses on topics from high temperature geothermal energy extraction, to lower temperature situations at ground surface and shallow depths. Providing broad international coverage, the chapters encompass field observations on sites in several countries as well as computational and laboratory studies. Ground conditions vary from hard rock to chalk, loess to London Clay.
Key features of this book include
- international case histories on geothermal energy extraction
- coverage of geothermal resource exploration, characterization and evaluation, and
- design and assessment of energy piles.
This book, which has been edited by two leading experts in the field, is an ideal resource for engineers and researchers seeking an overview of the latest research in this exciting area. ...
